Subject: Attention: Update on REAL ID and New Driver License Design from the California Department of Motor Vehicles

Dear Sir/Madam-

Please see the attached letter from California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Director Jean Shiomoto sharing information about the DMV’s plans for REAL ID driver license and ID card implementation.

Starting October 1, 2020, federal compliant identity documents, such as a REAL ID card, will be required to board a domestic flight or enter military bases and most federal facilities.

The California DMV will begin offering federal compliant REAL ID driver license and ID cards on January 22, 2018.

For more information on REAL ID visit REALID.dmv.ca.gov.

On January 22, all driver license and ID card will also have a new design. A PDF is attached on the new card design, click here to view the webpage.

You can also view the public service announcement on DMV’s Facebook and YouTube sites.

We ask that you please share this information with your department staff and industry members.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you,
