>>> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
>>> National Federation of the Blind Applauds Introduction of
>>> Greater Access and Independence through Nonvisual Access Technology (GAIN) Act
>>> Urges Swift Passage of Legislation to Preserve Independence of Blind People in their Homes
>>>
>>>
>>> Baltimore, Maryland (July 31, 2019): The National Federation of the Blind, the oldest and largest nationwide organization of blind Americans, today applauded the introduction of the Greater Access and Independence through Nonvisual Access Technology (GAIN) Act of 2019 in the House of Representatives. The bill was introduced by Representatives Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), and Mark DeSaulnier (D-CA). This legislation directs the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (the ?Access Board?) to develop a minimum nonvisual access standard for home-use medical devices, exercise equipment, and home appliances, and provide for the enforcement of the standard.
>>>
>>> ?The inaccessible design of most current appliances, home-use medical devices, and fitness equipment makes their controls difficult, or even impossible, to use by blind people,? said Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind. ?Inaccessibility is not a mere inconvenience. Full access to all features of a device are necessary for the privacy, wellbeing, and independence of blind Americans. We therefore commend Representative Schakowsky for introducing this legislation and urge members of Congress to act swiftly to pass it.?

>>>
>>>
>>>

>>>

>> Dear Friends,
>>
>>
>>
>> Congratulations on a fabulous national convention in Las Vegas. More
>> than
>> 370 Californians ultimately registered for the event. Some
>> Californians tested Lyft self-driving cars, others touched tactile renderings of Octopi.
>> We debated resolutions, enjoyed engaging general session speakers and
>> considered our choices during President Riccobono's banquet address.
>>
>> We missed our friends who could not attend. But we look forward to
>> seeing you at our state convention, November 7-10 at the Embassy
>> Suites Silicon Valley in Milpitas, CA, and in Houston for the 2020
>> national convention, June 29-July 4.  I am re-energized to work with
>> you and our state affiliate board to make this next state convention
>> the best yet. We'll hear from autonomous vehicle developers, share
>> information from blind people working in interesting and unusual jobs,
>> build on our inclusion and diversity initiatives, and gather together
>> around the issues that are important to blind people in California.
>> We'll also have a lot of fun and fellowship in the process. Mark your calendars now.
>>
>> Here is how we could really use your help in the meantime. We are
>> currently looking for sponsors to help cover the costs of some of our
>> important programs that make a real difference in the lives of blind Californians.
>> Sponsorship opportunities exist for our charter bus service from
>> Southern California for those who cannot afford to fly to the state
>> convention, our Braille Enrichment Literacy and Learning program for blind children, and our
>> state college scholarship program. We are actively seeking corporations,
>> foundations organizations or generous individuals to donate the funds
>> needed to cover these life-changing programs. Please reach out to
>> president at nfbcal.org <mailto:president at nfbcal.org>  if you have a
>> contact who can partner with us in this work.
