The advocacy committee of the NFB of California Inland Empire Chapter
is seeking your help with reaching out to your local Libraries to see
if they have Audio Books, Descriptive Movies and Screen Reading
Software on their computers for the blind and visually impaired to use
independently.
Here is a list of questions to ask the staff, and a description if needed.
1.How many computers do you have for public use?
2.Do you have any accessibility features such as a screen reader on
your computers?
Description of a Screen Reader:
Jaws-Job Access with Speech
A computer screen reader program for Microsoft Windows that allows
blind and visually impaired users to read the screen either with the
texts to speech output or by a refreshable Braille Display.
NVDA-Non Visual Desktop Access
A free open source, portable screen reader for Microsoft Windows.
Providing feedback via synthetic speech and braille, it enables blind
or vision impaired people to access computers running Windows for no
more cost then a sighted person.
Zoom Text-
Zoom Text Magnifier/Reader is a fully integrated Magnification and
reading program tailored for low vision users.
Magnifier/Reader enlarges and enhances everything on your computer
screen, echoes your typing and essential program activity, and
automatically reads documents, web pages and emails.
3.Do you have an inventory of Audio Books and Descriptive Movies?
4.Do you have access to books and Magazines in Braille?
Description:
Braille is a form of written language for blind people, in which
characters are represented by patterns of raised dots that are felt
with the finger tips.
Once you have obtain the information please forward it to me, so we
can follow through with getting the Libraries to become accessible for
the blind community to use independently.
Thank you,
