Hello from LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired in San Francisco, California! We have fantastic news—2021 Holman Prize application submissions is now open and there’s still over two weeks to get your application in!

Here at the LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired we believe whole-heartedly in encouraging and nurturing the “can-do” attitude within the blind community. Reinforcing independence and confidence is our mission, but what if we could do more than just that? In 2017, we launched a new project. The Holman Prize—named after famed and prolific blind world traveler of the 19th century James Holman—to award three blind or low vision individuals across the world $25k to live out their dreams and goals of blind ambition!

So, what exactly warrants the Holman Prize? What does a Holman Prize winning project look like? Well, just about anything, to tell you the truth. The Holman Prize was designed to support the growth of adventurous spirits, entrepreneurship and leadership within the blind community, in any form it may present itself. From personal-growth goals like climbing mountains or traveling the world independently, to providing education and training to underprivileged blind individuals in rural areas in foreign countries, the Holman Prize is here for all of it! The goal for our applicants and winners is not just to push boundaries and live life outside of the “blind box” but to eliminate the box altogether. Holman Prize winners are challenging and changing the common cultural misconceptions of what it means to be a blind person.

The ideal candidate for the Holman Prize is someone who is willing to promote themselves and their project as a positive role model and example of what every blind person is indeed capable of—success, adventure, and a life rich of experience and involvement within their communities, bridging the gap between the sighted and blind worlds. This year, the 2021 Holman Prize application submission period is from January 20, 2021 through March 14, 2021. To apply candidates are asked to fill out an application and provide a written outline of their project; what does the project entail? What is the overall goal and mission, and how can that be achieved? How will the $25k prize go towards accomplishing the project? We also ask that applicants submit a 90 second video pitching their project. Our panel of blind and low vision judges will view all applicants and weed through tiers of semi-finalists and finalists until they’ve decided on three Holman Prize winners. Creativity, enthusiasm, passion, and drive is what all Holman judges are looking for, and ultimately will also be what all Holman winners will have in common, no matter how their projects may differ.

Best of luck to you all,

The Holman Team
