CAPED Members, DSPS Professionals and Leaders we NEED your help!
You all came through on the Title 5 Revision to DE and now we need you more than ever to help get students engaged and voices heard regarding the Payan vs. LACCD case. This is our opportunity as a DSPS field to support our students in learning and exercising advocacy and activism. The zoom session will be tailored specifically for students, but we encourage you (or other DSPS advocates) to attend especially if you can help support student engagement at your campus on this issue. Please copy and paste the message below to the following people: students with disabilities at your college, the ASG Leadership at your college, any professors who teach courses relevant to social justice and advocacy, anyone who has direct linkage to students who can share their voice/story. We will be providing them with tangible action items and next steps at the end of this session! This effort is in alignment of one of CAPED's goals of increasing student engagement and amplifying student voice. Please don't ignore this!

Student Advocacy & Action Needed- Calling All Students, Student Leaders and Advocates for Students to Unite & Advocate to Support Disability Rights!!
Tell LACCD to keep its hands off our Civil Rights! The Board Trustees needs to hear directly from all students, back off!
In Payan and Mason v. The Los Angeles Community College District, LACCD is threatening to go to the Supreme Court of the United States and urge that it gut the two laws that secure the civil rights of all students and people with disabilities. These are the laws that ensures accessible buildings, extra-time on exams, accessible communication and more.
We are all part of "one civil rights fabric." The damage proposed by LACCD may well spread to other civil rights, as well. We need all students and student leaders to take action and speak out. We urge you to join a "Zoom teach-in" that will provide a brief overview of the case and what is on the line, but most importantly tangible steps that you can take as students, to demand that the LACCD do the ethical, moral and socially just thing!
The California Association of Postsecondary Education & Disability (CAPED) is hosting the free zoom "teach-in" and a call to action of students and student leaders to unite & advocate to support of our civil rights in education and beyond! This teach-in will be led by a life-long, fierce civil rights advocate, Paul Grossman, Executive Counsel, Association for Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD). Join us at a free zoom "teach-in" 2/17/22 from 12:00 PM-1:00 PM. This is a great opportunity for leadership and to engage in activism on a very important Civil Rights issue.
