Good afternoon Friends,

 

The California State Independent Living Council (SILC) is seeking qualified
individuals to serve on the Council. The SILC is an 18-member volunteer
council composed of leaders who are interested in promoting independent
living in the lives of people with disabilities.

 

The SILC makes policy recommendations to the Governor on issues which impact
the lives of Californians with disabilities, on programs and services, and
cross-system coordination needs for people with disabilities. The SILC also
influences policy and program development affecting people with
disabilities.

 

SILC Members participate in quarterly meetings, in monthly subcommittee
meetings and workgroups, and provide perspective and feedback to
policymakers. Travel is reimbursed for in-person meetings.  Virtual options
are also available.

Candidates will be interviewed by the SILC Executive Director and the
Governor's office. The selection process is competitive. Appointments will
be made at the discretion of the SILC and the Governor.

Desired SILC Member Characteristics:

*	Leadership skills
*	Time and ability to stay engaged in the work of the SILC for the
full 3-year term of membership
*	Knowledge of Independent Living philosophy and what it stands for
*	Integrity: Members who do what they say they are going to do
*	It is preferred that members have served on a board or advisory
committee before, and understand that it is a different kind of service from
other volunteer work
*	We currently have voting members who live in the following counties:
Los Angeles, Mendocino, Placer, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San
Francisco, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Shasta, and Tulare. It
is preferred that new members come from Counties that are not already
represented.
*	New members should add diversity to the Council - The following
groups are currently under- or un-represented on the SILC:

 

*	Youth (defined as ages 14 to 24) (Please note: you must be at least
18 years old to be considered a voting member of the SILC)
*	Older individuals with disabilities (those over age 60)
*	Persons of Color
*	Traumatic Brain Injury Community
*	Native American Community
*	Residents of Rural areas of California, Central Valley, and North
Eastern part of the state
*	Persons with Developmental Disabilities, Autism, or Aspergers
*	Person with Mental Illness
*	Persons from the LGBTQIA+ community 
*	Persons from the Blind and/or Low Vision community
*	Persons from the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community
