That is very nice of you Malik. Thank you. I’m sure this young man will be thrilled with his gift. He would have something that would be very useful for him, and it’s a good way to start introducing him to assistive technology.

Hello everyone.

The system will be delivered to Robert tomorrow. Instead of NVDA, I had installed a personal copy of JAWS 2018.

Thank you.

Hey everybody! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving! Now it's time for Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and any other holiday of your choice! As you recall, Saul Valadez was selected as the recipient of Adopt-A-Student for the Holidays 2018. Saul is 14 years old and a freshman in high school. He lives with his parents Alejandra and Jesus, and his little 8 year old brother Omar. Saul speaks English and Spanish, but his parents speak mainly Spanish with a little English.

Ok, so that's the general background on Saul, but what about a gift? What does he really, really want that would also be useful? Our Nancy, fluent in Spanish, was kind enough to talk to Saul's Mom. She found a laptop is something he really wants. It would be very useful in school, learning to use Word to write papers, and research. As you know computers are a way of life today. They're used at school, home, and work. It was a good choice, but kind of pricey.

Robert, Maliq, and Juanita helped out here. Maliq found a laptop and software. Juanita will install software and provide training. The package is $900. If chapter members contribute whatever we can, the board will make up the difference from the treasury. Robert spoke to the Board and they agreed it would be money well spent. The recommended donation from chapter members is $25. A larger donation would be great, but any amount would be appreciated! Please give your donations to Joy at our January meeting. She deserves to enjoy the holiday party too! /smiley-face

Here is what Saul will get:

Acer laptop with several USB ports and internal speakers
15.6 inch Screen
1 Tera-byte hard-drive
8 Gigs RAM
Windows 10
Windows Defender for protection
MS Office H/B 2016
NVDA screen reading software
DVD Drive
Over the shoulder carrying case
All current updates installed.
Set up and Orientation included by Juanita Herrera

A big thanks to all of you! Times are hard for everyone, but more so the young. Thank you for your generosity and for caring about a young man beginning his next stage in high school.

See you at the party!

P.S. Please call 818-486-3649 with any questions.
