Hi Nancy. Thank you again for telling us about this event. I was happy to see Jaymee and Johnny there too! Attendees received a nylon back-pack swag bag. It contained a key chain compass with red emergency light, a durable plastic case with  first aid to go supplies, a pack of DCRC Post-It Notes, a pen, a DCRC refrigerator magnet, a 7-day pill box in Braille, and a 52 by 84 foil mylar water-proof and weather-proof rescue blanket. By the way, the backpack is big enough to add a folded spare cane, Half liter bottle of water, a packets of Kleenex, a Cliff bar or two, and a roll of toilet paper. Well, you get my drift on customizing your emergency pack.

 

Throughout the day prizes were raffled off (free tickets). Lunch was excellent with chicken, beef, or  pork make to order soft tacos and all the condiments. It was a hot day and the cold beverages were welcome. Fruit juices (Melon, mango, and something else. They also had my favorite, horchata! 

 

The event was held in the DCRC parking lot. Music filled the event from a DJ who was happy to play requests. Nancy and Richie (I think that was his name?) were at the reception table answering phones and visitor's questions. Across from them was another table with people accepting people's names and emails for future event notification.

 

Also indoors were several tables fro the Gas Company, Voter registration, DCRC with Emergency Preparedness hand books.

 

Jim Baker, DCRC Executive Director, was kind enough to talk to me at length. He told me about the Center. It is for all disabilities. A minimum of 51 percent of the employees must have a disability. DCRC has exceeded that minimum! They are also there for the community. Some people may come fro the food or even a a drum circle. They will leave with a greater understanding that people with disabilities are people. We have strengths, we have weaknesses, the same as anyone else.

 

During the festival I noticed there was space for more booths. Jim said he thought it would be great if NFB had a booth. There would be no cost. DCRC would supply supplies like the booth, tables, chairs, etc. We would provide our own materials and people to man the booth. I thought something about guide dogs would be useful. Johnny and Jaymee had told me about a woman who was afraid of his dog. Johnny and Jaymee moved to another table. It may not work for everyone, but if people were educated they would not associate a service dog with a yappy hand-bag accessory, or a quote end-quote "guard" dog that had no training. Pre-conceptions and prejudices abound. It would be beneficial to everyone to learn about other people, get to know them.

 

Apologies for taking up so much of your time. I wanted to thank Nancy for telling us about this event. I also wanted to float the idea by you about having a booth at a DCRC event. Jim said there were several during the year. Nancy could tell us what's coming up. Outreach and education is a good thing!
