Hiking at Malibu Creek State Park Sunday, November 28, 2021 1925 Las Virgenes Rd, Calabasas, CA 91302 Hearts For Sight (HFS) invites you to explore a new hiking trail with us, along with our Sierra Club and Inspiring Connections outdoors (ICO) partners! This scheduled hike will take us to the beautiful and rugged Malibu Creek State Park, in the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains near Malibu. Long ago, Malibu was the land of the Chumash Indians. Along the way, this parcel became a country club and later a movie and television location. It has been open to the public as a wilderness area since 1976 and continues to be the home of many plants, birds, and animals. It is known for its mountainous landscape, waterways, and hiking trails. We will hike through the Ann Skager Trail Loop, then out to the nature center where we will talk to the docents and have lunch in the picnic area before we return to the trailhead. Our hike will total less than four miles on comfortable paved and dirt roads (very limited automobile access) and wide foot paths over rolling terrain (about 100' gain/loss). HFS and ICO will provide bus transportation to Malibu Creek. The bus will pick us up at Almansor Park in Alhambra at 8:00 AM. There will be a second stop at Balboa Sports Complex in Encino at 8:40 AM. We will then go to Malibu Creek State Park and will be back to Encino at 3:00 PM and Alhambra at 4:00 PM. Pick Up locations Addresses will be shared when you RSVP. Wear comfortable shoes, layers of clothing because it could be hot or cold or both, and a hat, with a day pack big enough to carry everything. Loaner equipment available; just ask. Bring at least two bottles of water, along with snacks and lunch. Only guide and service dogs allowed. HFS, Sierra Club, and ICO continue to adhere to all public safety protocols during these times, so ADVANCE RSVP IS A MUST. We are limiting our hiking group to 30, including both blind / visually impaired participants and sighted guides. First come, first serve. We are also encouraging folks to bring their own sighted guide for now or someone from the same household. If you don’t need one or if you don’t have one, please let us know ahead of time so we can make arrangements for a guide for you. If you have been tested positive for COVID-19 or awaiting your results from the test, please just stay home. You also must wear a mask and have hand sanitizer or alcohol. Be aware that there may be a mix of vaccinated and unvaccinated participants. SIGHTED GUIDES NEEDED. As interest in our hikes for the Visually Impaired continues to increase, so has our need for sighted guides. Please spread the word so that every VIP gets their own guide. No experience necessary. Just be willing to help and we will teach you everything you need to know. This hike is cosponsored by Hearts For Sight, Sierra Club and ICO. Participants must sign liability waivers for both organizations. Waiver forms will be provided when you RSVP. If you are interested in volunteering as a sighted guide or to RSVP, please be sure to contact Racquel Decipeda via email hearts4sight at gmail.com or call 818-457-1482 We look forward to another adventure at Malibu Creek State Park with you!
