hi,

by itself, it's what a copy machine does.
a light bar passes under the piece of paper and creates an exact image of 
the printed page.
if you want to read/have the image spoken, that's where most of the expense 
comes in and you will nead a software package to interpret/convert the image 
to manageable text.
the software runs about 1,000 so ask for a demo of open book from freedom 
scientific or kurzweil from humanware.
