I would only add that the needed software does not have to be expensive.  I
downloaded some just the other night for $14.99.

Just because Media Player, Real Player, and the like can play DVD's does not

mean you do not need DVD playing software.
For example, their machine might have a program that is specified for 
playing DVD such as Intervideo, Power DVD, etc.
Other types of media players can play DVD's but not without DVD playing 
programs.
They act like drivers that allow the media players to recognize DVD discs 
and play them.
Once the DVD program has been installed then they can play DVD's on any kind

of media player.
If the person is well versed with Windows Media Player then playing is 
fairly easy, just use the keyboard hotkeys.
