Gary, I did some experimenting around and here is what I found:
If you search in the search box you cannot pin the results to the start
menu.
If, on the otherhand, you use the "all programs" and navigate to what you
want, you can pin to the start menu.
Try that ad see if that works for you.

Gary, I am able to pin on windows 7 by using my shift f10 The taskbar and
applications toolbar behaves differently in 7 and vista then it does in xp.
For example, lots of taskbar icons do not show up unless you reset there
default settings in taskbar properties.

By pend I mean the function where you add and remove things from the Start
Menu and the taskbar.

I will look for a laptop configuration utility before going after something
else.

I'm afraid I don't quite understand, and maybe my experience with Windows XP
doesn't carry over to Windows 7.  If SIFT F10 does anything, it should be
the same as the Applications key and not right-clicking, but perhaps I don't
understand.  I did verify that SHIFT F10 does work like the applications key
under XP within the start menu, but I am not sure what is meant by "Pend" so
maybe my Windows 7 ignorance is showing.  However, don't overlook the fact
that many laptops have a keyboard configuration application that might let
you define an Applications key.  That might be another approach.
