Hi Nancy -- Thanks! that was it -- but the lock was underneath in front.  I 
didn't know there was a lock.  Now I'm happily scanning!

Reach around the back and make sure that the lock switch isn't set to
locked.  There is usually a little icon of a padlock.  If the lock has a
liggle nitch in it, that is the open one.  If it doesn't, that is the locked
position.  The lock keeps the camera in the unit from moving while in
transit.
