Robert,

You might give Microsoft Security Essentials a try for virus and Malware protection and it is free and seems to be accessible.  Also, activating the Windows firewall 
will give you some protection there, too.  Some feel strongly that the Windows Firewall is not a good choice since it doesn't watch outgoing communications, but if 
you have something watching for malware, it partly fills that gap by keeping programs that would likely send unauthorized information off your system.  There are 
better firewalls out there, but it seems as though which are accessible keeps changing.
