I'm not surprised they're trying to get out of it.  Why would you want to spend the money when you'll have to raise the price on each unit to recover the costs?  Plus, it will cut into their profit margin.  I don't think I necessarily agree with the argument that doing this will make their devices "heavier".  Certainly if they defined "making the unit accessible" as including braille, then yes I would agree.  It DEFINITELY would make the device heavier and add significant cost considering the cost of current Braille technology.  However, if they only made the devices "voice compliant" ... where the reader could listen to what was going on with a text-to-speech engine, then I'm not sure I agree that the unit would be heavier.  Add a speaker, and the software to convert the text to speech, and you're done.  And, the device (given that it has enough buttons on it) could be reprogrammed once the user turns on an accessibility option ... which could be off by default ... such that the user could have sufficient navigation capabilities.

 

Personally, we need choices about the tablets and eReaders we have available.  Competition is a good thing.  It's the only way prices are going to go DOWN on devices we use.  So I don't think these companies should be able to "get out of it".
