Howdy folks,
I apologize for the cross-post, but this is one of those messages that
should be widely distributed. I'm sending this message to the
Window-Eyes support list and the NFB computer science list. Please feel
free to forward as you see fit.
I have been in contact with Spider Oak, a secure backup service
regarding the accessibility of their client software. Spider Oak is like
Dropbox in a lot of ways, but because of the way it works placing your
stuff on Spider Oak does not give them access to your data. They call it
"0-knowledge." You can read more about the concept on their web site if
interested.
A representative of the company told me that they are actually looking
at making the client accessible. (At the moment, it isn't) One of the
things they asked me to do is to contact any blind users who may be
interested in using the service. They wanted me to have blind users
contact them requesting accessibility support, and naming the screen
reader they're using. I invite all of you to take them up on that
request. Even if you don't think you would be interested in the service,
it's always good to have things be accessible for those of us who choose
to use them. I personally would love to have a remote synchronization
service which allows me to control the encryption keys used on my data
so that no one but me can recover that data.
Anyone interested in contacting Spider Oak about this should send email
to Shanya Almafeta. Shanya told me to have you send email to
support at spideroak.com, taking care to mention that the message is for
Shanya.
Here's to hoping she gets positively bombarded with requests, as that's
what she wants.
