Hi there, I'm new to the list but I think i can help. You can get all of your software for free, over jaws I prefer a reading software called NVDA which is completely free and I think it's better than jaws, personally I'm not a huge fan of open office, so there are other free wordprocessing software's out there, jart and libre office are great alternatives. So now you can get free screen reading software and a free wordprocessor. The only thing is that i'm not sure how well they work with Windows 8. I would highly highly highly recommend Windows 7 or Windows 8. And the more RAM the better, don't worry too much about internal hard drive space.

Hope this helped
