[nfbcs] All In One Scanner/Printer with Accessible Software

Nicole,

While I don't have an answer to your question exactly, I was interested in
your comment that you have used Kurzweil with your scanner. If part of your
question is what can you use for OCR with a scanner, people have used both
FineReader and OmniPage with screen readers. Neither are perfect, and my
experience with OmniPage has been that you have to do a little learning to
figure out how it can best be used. Some seem to feel FineReader might be a
little more accessible. Some use both programs by using their interfaces to
Microsoft Word which generally lets you perform a scan and get the results
from inside Word. I have not used the latest version of OmniPage, though.
>From what I have seen, the OCR software that comes with a scanner is usually
either a stripped-down or limited version of OCR.

I have a Cannon scanner, and with the mouse keys or JAWS cursor, it can
mostly be used, although I could not assign programs to the scanner buttons
for some reason. I have used the software that comes with a Samsung printer
and could mostly use that as well, but it also required some use of mouse
keys. If you had an HP scanner that used HP's Precision Scan Pro software,
that is more elaborate than what usually comes with a scanner now, in my
experience. I've seen ads where a given scanner comes with OmniPage, for
example, but it almost always turns out to be a limited version with an
inexpensive upgrade path which is worth something. Some of the scanner
software I've seen seems to be more geared to scanning pictures, although I
did find accidentally that my Cannon scanner seems to have some OCR in it.

The problem is that the experiences of any of us of even a year ago could
mean nothing when you buy a current model. I think your best bet is to try
to find the hardware with which you are comfortable knowing that you will be
able to control many aspects of your device through Windows interfaces,
unless someone has a very current example of something that is ideally
accessible and is also good hardware.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Does anyone have any information on this? I need to know in the next
week or so.

Subject: [nfbcs] All In One Scanner/Printer with Accessible Software

As my current printer and flatbed scanner, which are more
than seven years old, are wearing out/becoming obsolete, I am looking for a
new scranner/printer. One of the problems that I have encountered recently
when buying new hardware was that the accompanying software was not
accessible. Does anyone know of an all in one, preferably HP, that has
accessible software? Alternatively, is there another program that can be
installed in addition to that which comes with the scanner? I have used
Kurzweil in the past and am not interested in using it again for numerous
reasons.

Thanks,

Nicole
