[nfbcs] weird punctuation

I work with a friend on editing some material. I send him using "live mail" 
what I have written, and he sends it back after doing some editing. It comes 
back with some very weird changes in punctuation. Other mail from him also 
has the weird errors.

where I should get an apostrophy I get
’
and where I should get quote marks, I get
“
and odd substitutions for some other punctuation, but I have not kept track 
of them.

Do you have any idea of why this happens, and what I can do about it.
