I am not surprised that you have to take Comp Sci classes for a 
climatology degree. All jobs in scientific fields require knowledge of 
computers these days.

And yes, I'd say knowing latex is very valuable. I used to teach a 
mini-course on latex here at the Math Department at the University Of 
Wisconsin. But we don't do that any more because almost all our students 
already know it. Or they pick it up on their own. Welcome to the 21st 
century.

I think the best place to learn latex on your own is through the wikibook.
