[nfbcs] LaTeX [was "Re: Computer science mentors?"]

On windows, I have had success with MikTeX at the commandline, but not with the graphical version? Has anyone had success with the GUI? The commandline version is pretty easy to use and doesn't require much unix knowledge.

A more annoying issue I am currently facing is editing documents with others who don't use LaTeX. I currently use latex2rtf to make an rtf file that others can edit with track changes and comments. However, I then have to incorporate these changes into a .tex file; the whole process is very inefficient. The only reason I am using LaTeX in these situations is (1) managing references (which there are many of in scientific articles) and (2) math. It would be soooo much better if there was a 100% accessible reference manager that could be used directly in microsoft word. However, I've found my inefficient system of using LaTeX and rtf files still more efficient than working with reference managers like endnote, mendeley, and zotero.

For MacOS users TeXshop is a free and accessible front end to LaTeX as well as all other forms of TeX. It is worth looking into. You will still need to install the TeX system but there are instructions for doing this at the TeXShop website http://pages.uoregon.edu/koch/texshop/

After creating the doc in latex, I convert it to a pdf with pdflatex and that's the document I sent out. This is all linux, of course. That's another issue.

For example, if I want to use LaTeX to write a personal letter, I'll Google for LaTeX and letters and find a ton of samples to choose from and use as a starting point. I use pdflatex to turn my LaTeX markup into a PDF document.
