Steve,

I may have missed something but, why are you suggesting QWS3270? Is it
proven to work well with JAWS?

Everybody,

Unless we know that her company supports a mode to support Open SSH or
another of these packages mentioned, I am somewhat skeptical that they will
work well. 3270 emulation is a very different sort of emulator. Some of
the conversions in the past that used other terminal types didn't implement
them completely, but if your company has a 3270 controller that supports
other terminal types such as the old DEC VT terminals, I think you are still
better off looking specifically for a 3270 emulator. Jack and Louis, if
either of you know that a given solution supports 3270 emulation, that would
certainly be helpful. Generally, a connection to an IBM mainframe is done
through a protocol that I believe is called IPSNA. The exchange is
different than standard Linux terminals in that the data exchange occurs at
the screen level rather than at a character or a line level. For example,
one can make changes in an editor and fill in fields on a screen but each
change doesn't even go to the mainframe until one does something that
requires an interaction with the mainframe such as scrolling down to the
next screen. Sometimes in the past when I was able to use a more general
terminal emulator, deleting a single character caused the entire screen to
be resent which made such systems very unresponsive. Even if they worked,
they did not work that well. I do not know the specifics of the various GUI
interfaces to Linux, though, and maybe there is something that is similar.

I remember years ago there was a DOS TN3270 program that I was able to get
to work pretty well, but we're going back thirty years or so now. Tracy, I
still think trying the Demo of QWS3270 might be worth a try in your case.
If that worked for you, it wouldn't be that expensive and you might mostly
have it made.

I don't mean to seem unwilling to consider other options, but my experience
has been less good when I have used other terminal types on an IBM
mainframe, and there other some other options that might still work. I
apologize if anything above is incorrect.

Best regards,

Steve

I am trying to access an IBM mainframe, and use TSO/ISPF on it.
I'm a bit unclear about SSH, even after reading about it. My boss does have
PuTTY, and tried getting into the mainframe with it, but he said it showed
the screens in a very strange way, with the whole screen on 1 long line, if
I understood him right.

I'll ask him about Open SSH, but it may be the same as PuTTY. He knows more
about this than I do. I'm basically a mainframe programmer. The protocols
that get me into the mainframe and let me do my job don't mean much to me.

Steve J has recommended some fonts, but my emulator doesn't have them.
