[NFBCS] 3270 emulation - success!

Tracy,

First, I did not have the font issues you are having with QWS3270. Especially if you are having the same issue of the font or cursor changing when you type, I am really wondering if there is a system setting specific to your computer. I am assuming that you are not using Windows Magnifier in any way, but perhaps it is worth making sure it didn't get turned on somehow. I also am wondering if there is a mouse pointer issue. Did you try typing something in Hummingbird and then seeing if you could read it with the JAWS cursor? I believe JAWS may well report no font when using the PC cursor when it has lost track of the cursor because it doesn't know where to look for the font. Figuring out if you really have a "no font" issue or a cursor tracking issue could make a difference. If the problem with QWS3270 is exactly the same as the Hummingbird problem and both involve losing your cursor or font when you type, that really seems to me to point to something in your system, but of course I can't know that for sure. I also don't remember having to use the JAWS cursor to find out where to change the QWS3270 cursor shape, but I don't have a way to check since I used up my demo time.

In addition, I share your frustrations. I work part time now and am fortunate enough to have worked longer than I had expected. Therefore, when my Windows 7 work laptop reached its replacement date, I was very much put out. I didn't think I was ever going to have to set up a new laptop for work again for one thing. In addition, my employer changed which emulators they supported as well. My journey with my new work laptop was smoother than yours is with Hummingbird, but it was not smooth. In addition, there are getting to be fewer and fewer people using 3270 emulation which is also a contributing factor. Therefore, it doesn't seem as though the products for that purpose are updated as completely or even supported very well. Also, the cheap program my employer adopted seemed to work find for everybody else. Nobody really cared that they couldn't change the blink rate of the cursor, for example. Some of the 3270 emulators such at Attachmate and reflections have moved to more complex work spaces that have made accessibility difficult as well. Jack's comment about Secure CRT is interesting because a terminal emulator that mostly sticks to emulation may have potential. However, like you, I found it frustrating that I needed to spend all of this time on trying to keep things working that nobody else has to deal with. It is a fact of life, unfortunately, and that's why I've concentrated on possible solutions. Still, please know I do understand your frustration as well as Kathy's. I suspect we will have an easier time pushing IBM for information and/or help than some of the other companies, but of course even that takes time.

Best regards,

Steve

Well, I did my happy dance a bit prematurely. I did some more editing, and this time Jaws did its "no font" thing. So it's not happening every time, but sometimes. Closer, but still no cookie.

I got a demo copy of QWS3270, as Steve recommended, and, once I found how to set the cursor, it worked perfectly! Dancing for joy!

I was able to edit a job, submit it, and review the results, all without any problems. I'll use it all day tomorrow, but so far it looks good.

Kathy, and anyone who wants to know, I was only able to get to the menus by using the Jaws cursor and the Jaws mouse. The cursor options are under session layout. I was not able to tab or arrow to cursor properties. I could only find it by looking with the Jaws cursor and using the Jaws mouse to click it. It stayed set when I closed the session, then opened a new one.

Blinking and vertical bar are what's working for me. The font is Courier New. Not sure of the size-I didn't find where to set it, but the default is working OK.

Steve, thanks a million! I am so relieved to have this working on my new laptop with Windows 10.

I also wanted to say, even before I got this thing working, that having the NFBCS here to help and encourage me has really made a difference in my life.
I've gotten some great advice, and I don't feel like I'm all alone, splashing about in the swamp in the dark and hoping I don't get eaten by an alligator.

Tracy
