[NFBCS] vm ware desktop

Hi Steve, Bryan, and anyone else following this thread.
If memory serves correctly, I think the documentation from Freedom
Scientific/VFO states that it is preferred that the version of jaws
installed on the client computer and the server computer match one another.
That isn't to say that it won't work if the client version is newer than the
server version, as I understand it, essentially what this working properly
is dependent upon is fs video drivers being installed on the server.
In my own case, I set it up myself because my primary function at work is
desktop support so I have admin access to all the desktops and laptops, and
I can get access to servers on an "as needed basis" so I kept both versions
at the same level.
For Bryan, another thought, has anyone tried nvda inside the vm in question
or any other.
My experience with rdp which probably should be similar for the vm is that
nvda will run fine without any tweaking either as a local install, or simply
copy the portable version to a accessible network share and run it from the
command line or set it up to run from the properties of the individual
user's ms active directory login after an user, we'll call him joe, logs
into his vm.
To get help logging in you could use narrator and enable the option to bring
sound to this computer in the client for an rdp session, not 100% sure if
you can do something similar when connecting to your vm.
Bryan, do you specificly have to have jaws, or do you just need a screen
reader and accessibility?
I've used nvda and narrator for rdp sessions a great deal in the last 6
months and I'd have to say that its convenience always wins out for the most
part vs all the extra work in getting jaws to work.
I also find myself using nvda more and more on a daily basis in my work
given the number of laptops and desktops I touch on a daily basis.
Just some alternative thoughts for discussion.
I need more coffee!
Regards to all.
Ed

Actually, I don't believe the server and local JAWS versions have to be the
same. When I initially started using this with RDP, the versions were the
same. However, the server administrator was reluctant to do JAWS upgrades
but I continued to upgrade my local system. At the end, I was running with
significantly different versions.

You will have to have the server version upgraded if you need new jaws
features on your virtual desktop.

Btw, if you don't have jaws at all on the virtual desktop, the screen is
just an image so you can not access it locally with jaws. You should be able
to read it with the jaws OCR feature but you won't b able to interact with
the screen.

Hi Bryan, the version of jaws installed on the server has to match the
version of jaws installed on the client computer from which you connect to
it.
The version of jaws you have installed on your desktop or laptop, the
client, has to be professional/authorized for remote access.
To be honest I am more familiar with setting this up for rdp vs setting it
up to connect to a vm as I set this up at work so I can rdp to my desktop in
my office via vpn during the covid-19 pandemic however if I can help please
feel free to reach out.
Have fun - Ed

Hi,

I'm just getting started and the IT guy hasn't installed jaws on the company
server.
What version needs to be installed and where?

After you connect, You might try to run jaws on the virtual desktop by
entering Windows-R > jaws2020 > Enter. This will confirm you have jaws
configured correctly on the server.

When I used Microsoft Remote Desktop, there was a virtual desktop setting
that allowed you to automatically start an application on the virtual
desktop when you connected. If this is not available, you can always put
jaws in the Windows start folder on you virtual desktop. This should only
apply to your desktop and would not affect other users on the server. .

Hi,

Anyone know if jaws is installed on the remote pc, will that make jaws talk
on my end?

I am logging into vm ware and jaws does not speak the virtual desktop.

Thanks,

Bryan
