[NFBCS] {Spam?} RE: NVDA review mode

Hi Steve.
That wasn't confusing at all.
Thanks to you, Chris and Curtis, I feel like I understand the NVDA review
mode much better than I did. The only confusing bit left is that I'm using
a laptop with no numpad, but, now that I understand better, I can look at
NVDA help again and figure that out.
I can reach back before Jaws to other review modes I recall that may be more
similar to the NVDA way.
Thanks guys!
Tracy

Curtis and Tracy,

There is a little more to this if I may add to it. It is really getting
difficult to find absolute comparisons in all cases between NVDA, JAWS and
Narrator, because they do some things differently. However, usually when
you use the keys on the Numeric keypad in NVDA, you start out in Object
mode. In that mode, the NUMPAD Arrow keys move around within the current
object. Pressing the NUMPAD ARROW keys with the NVDA key will allow
navigation by object. You have to try it to get the feel for it. There
are options to open and object that will generally move your focus to that
object. You can get some idea of which objects are contained in larger
objects as well.

However, pressing NVDA and Numpad HOME will place you into "Screen Review"
Mode which is fairly similar to the JAWS cursor. At any time, you can
switch to the other ARROW keys which are still controlled by the
application. This is somewhat analogous to how Window-Eyes handled this.
If you go back to the NUMPAD, you will still be in Review Mode. If you
press NUMPAD HOME again, NVDA will usually say "No Next Review Mode" because
NUMPAD HOME is one of two keys that cycles through multiple modes. To have
the Numeric keypad leave Screen Review, press the NUMPAD END key which will
Cycle you through what they call "previous" review modes including Document
and Object. To some degree, moving around within an object using the NUMPAD
arrow keys is a little like restricting the JAWS cursor.

On a laptop, the Next and Previous Review Mode keys are NVDA PGUP and NVDA
PGDN. If one looks at the NVDA Command Reference from within the help menu,
the LAPTOP and Gesture equivalents are all listed.

I am not an NVDA expert so I don't know to what degree the selected review
mode is application dependent. Tracy, as you know, you can always count on
me for a long and confusing answer.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Tracy:

In NVDA, Review Mode is not a thing you turn on and off. Simply using the
keys on the number pad executes the NVDA reviewing functions. The arrow
keys, as in the arrow keys in the center section of the larger keyboard,
still function as they normally would. All of this can get a bit confusing
if one does not have a full-sized keyboard with a number pad.

Cordially,

Curtis Chong

Thanks Chris. I tried this last night, and it worked; I was able to find
the info I was looking for.
Do you know if there's a command like the Jaws PC cursor, to get out of
review mode, or does it automatically stop once I stop using NVDA with the
arrow keys?

I'd like to know more about this as well. From what I can tell, you can use
the NVDA-key+Page-up and Page-down to change review modes and then
NVDA-key+Up-arrow and Down-arrow to move around in that review mode. Screen
review mode seems to be the closets to JAWS cursor mode.

I have read about the NVDA review mode in the manual a few times, and I
still don't get it. Is there a keystroke in NVDA similar to "route Jaws to
PC", after which I can cursor around and explore the screen, then use
another keystroke to return to what Jaws calls the PC cursor?

Or can someone recommend somewhere to read about the NVDA review mode that
explains it better than the manual?

Tracy
