[NFBCS] IRC Access From Windows

Hi Curtis,

I will take minutes for the various meetings of the W3C mathematics working group during the W3C fall convention. Apparently IRC is their preferred method for doing this so that everyone can see and add to the minutes as they are written. Also there are facilities in IRC for sending comments during meetings, asking questions, and working with agendas.

I have a lot to learn.

Louis:

I am curious to know why a person would need IRC to take minutes. Normally, if a computer is involved, I have no problem using Notepad or Word. On the iPhone, I enter a program called DRAFTS and write my notes using Braille Screen Input. This latter approach works extremely well if I can bring along a small Bluetooth keyboard.

With kind regards,

Curtis Chong

Subject: [NFBCS] IRC Access From Windows

Hello,

Earlier, I asked for help accessing the internet relay chat (IRC) system from windows. Two subscribers from this group have suggested the Windows graphical client MIRC. While I have not yet got MIRC to work, I am following up with those two subscribers for mor help.

I am trying to learn IRC so that I can take minutes for meetings in mid-October.

Here are my IRC experiences thus far.

---

To access IRC, I have tried a web-based approach (https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Firc.w3.org%2F&data=04%7C01%7C%7Cffb9fddddadb4f093bc908d9793ec33e%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637674132733327456%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=wX8Rt%2BhNs3p5dWtlOl1jF7nxTnA2gYby8zDC1fs64RE%3D&reserved=0), and the Microsoft Windows client MIRC (https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mirc.com%2F&data=04%7C01%7C%7Cffb9fddddadb4f093bc908d9793ec33e%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637674132733337426%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=lty9z0f0a3%2FoFMhcG59MyjZkzx9Km5JpFfkx09rVUbY%3D&reserved=0). I am having basic trouble running IRC commands on both applications.

In the web-based client, if I enter /whois Louis (where Louis is my
nickname) I get an understandable response. If I type /help whois, I do not get a response. I can't get any response from the /help command from the web client.

In MIRC, if I type 'whois Louis, I get an understandable response in a separate window. If I type /help whois, I get a list of MIRC commands beginning with "w", but "whois" is not one of those commands. The MIRC help is only for MIRC commands and not for IRC commands.

If I type /invite zakim in either the web-based client or MIRC, I do not get any response. Zakim is part of the IRC minute-taking system.

I would appreciate any further help you can offer.

Louis Maher
