[NFBCS] NVDA with Ubuntu

I would like to thank everyone for their suggestions. I am running WSL which is a detail I forgot to mention. I should have also mentioned that the computer is flakey in general. The microphone quits working after several hours and I have to reboot. NVDA and system volume fluctuate for no reason. The speaker emits a distortion sound once in awhile. The school configured and sent me the computer so I am grateful that I don’t have to use my own setup. I have found that using special configurations like Ubuntu and WLS can be delicate and things can stop working for no reason. The school has an accessibility person who seems to know what she is doing.

We looked into another option using Amazon Web Services and that didn’t work at all. Navigating the website and setting it up was a real pain. Some of the staff at the school use Apple computers and say the computers work with their education platform. They thought about sending me a mac but we ended up not having to do that. I’m glad because I’m not familiar with the Apple desktop environment. Using a Linux machine with Orca might have been an option but I found when I tried setting it up on a spare computer,

I couldn’t get BRAILLETTY to work. At any rate things should be working again. I do wonder why I get these messages from Ubuntu saying components are being updated. I am running everything in a local environment and only connect to the Internet to use the school’s canvas page, Github, or Zoom.

Thanks,

Dan

Yeah Jim I agree. That is the only way I can think of that working.

I am assuming that Dan is running WSL. Basically, windows with Ubuntu user environment on top of it.

Having said that, I have no idea why Dan is having this issue either.

Take care,

I am still unsure how you are hearing a Windows chime but are running Ubuntu if you are not running a virtual machine. My second question is how are you using NVDA on Ubuntu when it is made for Windows but Ubuntu is a Linux operating system! My thought is that you are running Windows but using the Linux subsystem which is Linux command line interface that was introduced in Windows 10. If this is not the case I am stumped. It is interesting though. I am glad you got your computer working again.

Hi Brian,

I'm not sure if I am using a virtual machine. I'm not using a Linux screenreader like Orca. When I boot up my computer and log in, NVDA starts and I get the usual Windows startup messages. The last message is something like "welcome to Ubuntu." I sometimes get messages that it is installing new components. I don't know where it gets them because I am running with everything on a local host. The only time I update things is when

I use GitHub repositories. I meet with school staff using Zoom and that isn't a problem. I shut the computer down and restarted it and now things are

Working again.

I suspect the problem is temporary. Terminal emulation is always finicky. I worked as a mainframe programmer for 26 years and I had to cross my fingers every time I updated JAWS or their was a mainframe operating system update. I used a very old terminal emulation software AttachMate which is the only one Freedom

Scientific supported for mainframes, and they barely supported it. As a result, I approach every new terminal setup with trepidation.

Are you running Ubuntu within a virtual machine or natively? I am so curious to know how you were able to get NVDA to work in Ubuntu at all. Can you explain how you are accessing Ubuntu and what you are trying to do exactly?

Hi All,

I am using Ubuntu to connect with my school's education environment.

Things were working well until an hour ago. When I boot up my

computer, I see the Ubuntu terminal prompt. I can launch any Windows

application including Visual Studio. The problem I am having is that

when I switch between the Linux terminal and Visual Studio, NVDA stops

working. I use the control key plus tilde to cycle back and forth between Visual Studio and the terminal.

To make matters worse, if I open a JavaScript file and then a spec

file NVDA isn't announcing anything when I press control plus tab to

cycle between the spec file and my JavaScript. Things have been

working well for months. I was able to edit code, and review output

from the terminal by navigating line by line using control plus up or

down arrow. I didn't change any settings. I was in a Zoom meeting and

shared my screen with someone who could see. He determined that

keyboard commands were working. I just don't get reliable feedback

from NVDA with speech and my Focus Braille display. I hope someone has a suggestion. This is a scary situation.

Thanks,

Dan
