[NFBCS] IBM AS400

Dan and Chris,

My understanding is that AS-400 systems are accessed with a terminal or terminal emulation that is similar to the IBM 3270 emulator that is used on larger mainframes. I could be wrong but would defer to Chris on this, but I believe 5250 terminals are used. There are terminal emulators that work with screen readers including IBM's Personal Communications emulators. There may be others as well. Some of the 3270 emulators have 5250 options within the same software. People to create emulators for these environments are getting innovative, though, in providing multiple ways of getting work done on a personal computer. This means that one sometimes has to do a bit of work to sort out what works best for a screen reader. While I have not used 5250 terminal emulation, 3270 emulation is a bit different than other kinds of terminal emulators such as VT-100, so one has to learn a little about using that kind of emulator, but it shouldn't stop one from checking out a job possibility.

It is probably well worth investigating AS-400 jobs. The real trick is learning what exactly the job entails.

Best regards,

Steve

I think of an AS400 as a small server, so I doubt there's a screen reader for it. I think you'll need some kind of a terminal emulation software and then use your Windows screen reader.

I was looking at a mainframe job listing, and it mentioned the AS400 environment. I wonder if there ever was a screenreader for it? IBM did have a screenreader for DOS which I used and liked.

Thanks,

Dan
