[NFBCS] VDI VMWare

I used to use Remote Desktop to get into my workstation in the office when I was working from home. I’m not real clear how I would use it to get into the VMWare server, but I can ask the helpdesk guy about it. Thanks Tom and Beth.

Hi Tracy,

Unfortunately, I’m not much help with the SQL part of your question. The last time I used it was on a stand alone system via the graphical interface long ago and again over the command line in school. 😊

However, would you be running SQL from the command line or would you be using the GUI interface? You should be able to SSH into it using a command line over remote desktop depending on the configuration.

Alternatively, as Tom noted in his message, you can connect using Remote desktop. This is what I do at work, there is a shell script that connects me to a VMWare server, and once connected, I can access a full windows desktop environment with VMWare.

I have not used JAWS Tandem in this situation, but maybe that would help. You could either connect through JAWS servers, which probably is not the option you would want for confidential or proprietary information. You could also try Tandem Direct, which would give you a direct connection from the company server to you only. I have not tried this, but I looked into it for some work projects. Unfortunately, due to various configuration issues and network requirements, it wasn’t possible for me.

There are many smart Linux people here, I’m sure you could remotely connect over command line and use a version of SQL and perhaps they could help with that.

Perhaps sending an email or calling JAWS Support might help. I’m sorry I don’t have better answers for you.

I’m sorry to say, as you know, there are no easy answers with this stuff, you will probably end up trying a few things and hopefully, you’ll find something that works. Perhaps someone with more knowledge can suggest alternatives. I definitely understand the frustration, I’m trying to connect some virtual machine software for telework projects that are not going as well as I would like and nobody knows about accessibility, so I have to keep brain storming and trying stuff.

V/R

Beth

Hi Beth.

That sounds like what the helpdesk person said, a thin client.

My understanding is that I would connect to some place, either by a browser or a desktop app, then connect from there to SQL.

In my experiments with Citrix, the first connection worked, but the 2nd didn’t, the one that in this case would go to SQL. Is the VMWare connection different?

The helpdesk is willing to put Jaws on the VMWare server, but will Jaws still work when I get to SQL?

Does anyone know, or do we just have to experiement and possibly waste everyone’s time?

Tracy

Hi Tracy,

We have a similar setup at work. Our VDI is on a thin client where JAWS is installed on the thin client and the server.

However, if you have other options that also use VMWare, you could connect through remote desktop through the VMWare, or you could use SSH to get connect your client to the server. There are several VMWare options, it’s just that many people prefer the browser way of doing things. I use remote desktop from my desktop which then connects to a VMWare environment. Whatever happens, just as you noted in your message, you need to have JAWS or some other screen reader that is the same from your end to the server where you are connecting.

I would check with the folks you’re dealing with to see if you can connect through remote desktop or SSH.

I know there are some very knowledgeable folks who know more than I do about this issue, but I hope this is a helpful start.

Respectfully,

Beth

I am doing some consulting, and a client is asking if I can use VDI. It is some kind of VMWare.

I started it through a web address, and it didn’t show me any of the things the sighted people saw on the screen, nor could I select anything, so I’m not too hopeful. There is also a desktop client, but wouldn’t that work the same?

If it’s like Citrix, they would be willing to put Jaws on the server, but would that work any better than Citrix does? I want to use it as a gateway to get to their SQL server.

If anyone has any experience with VDI, please share. I’m hoping for a simpler solution, but perhaps this will work better than I think.

I am running Jaws and Windows 10.

Thanks.

Tracy
