Impulsa al Departamento de Justicia a Apoyar el Acuerdo



Washington, DC (10 de septiembre del 2009): La Federación Nacional de

Ciegos, la organización más Antigua, y más grande de gente ciega a escala
nacional,

y principal en la abogacía al acceso por los ciegos a la información
digital, atestiguó ante el Comité Judicial de la Cámara hoy

que el acuerdo propuesto entre Google, y los autores,

y los editores, con respecto al proyecto de los Libros de Google, debe ser
aprobado. El acuerdo de los Libros de Google hará que millones de los
títulos

estén disponibles a los ciegos, y otros Norte Americanos con discapacidades
en la inprenta,

brindando más acceso a la palabra impresa de lo que los ciegos han tenido en

toda la historia de la humanidad.



El Doctor Marc Maurer, Presidente de la Federación Nacional de Ciegos,

dijo al Comité Judicial de la Cámara: "El acuerdo de Google es, para

los ciegos, y muchos otros, el paso siguiente en la democratización del

conocimiento. Ese proceso comenzó con la introducción de la inprenta

impresa, y entonces, para los ciegos, con la invención del Braille. Ahora

la tecnología está disponible que supera las limitaciones tradicionales

de la inprenta y del Braille, prometiendo hacer disponible millones de

títulos a los ciegos en Braille, o en cualquier otro formato de nuestra

selección. Los intereses comerciales estrechos de los competidores de Google

no deben ser permitidos bloquear a los Norte Americanos que no pueden leer
la inprenta

de todas las oportunidades que el mayor acceso al conocimiento escrito ponga

a disposición de ellos. Es hora de que  las puertas mundiales grandes

de las bibliotecas sean abiertas y le dén la bienvenida a todos."



La Federación Nacional de Ciegos también impulsó al Departamento de Justicia

de los Estados Unidos, que está repasando los términos del

acuerdo, el apoyarlo.



"El acuerdo de los Libros de Google, consiste en un paso importante adelante 
en
el avance de

los derechos civiles de los Norte Americanos ciegos, y de otros que no
pueden leer la inprenta,

debido a que aumenta substancialmente nuestras oportunidades para la
educación,

y el empleo," el Presidente Maurer dijo. "El Departamento de Justicia,

que se encarga de la protección de los derechos civiles de todos los Norte
Americanos,

debe respetar el acuerdo de los partidos a este acuerdo, y

permitir que sus provisiones del acceso sean ejecutadas plenamente. Al hacer
eso,

el gobierno enviará un mensaje potente, que valora

la participación de los ciegos en la sociedad, y que cree que debemos

tener acceso a toda la información a la cual nuestros amigos videntes

y los colegas tienen acceso."
