Estimados Compañeros Federacionistas,

Esta semana he estado pensando mucho acerca de la manera de llevar a 
cabo las actividades de la Federación Nacional de Ciegos y qué repercusiones

podría tener la filosofía de la Federación sobre la sociedad. 
Reconocemos el valor de la igualdad, y trabajamos para eliminar la 
discriminación basada en las características de la ceguera. Aunque diría

que nuestra filosofía acerca de los efectos de enfatizar ciertas 
características sobre otros se aplica a muchos otros aspectos de nuestra 
sociedad. Sin duda es

pertinente esta semana ya que el tema del racismo ha vuelto a 
convertirse en un factor de división en nuestra sociedad.

Esta semana hemos puesto dos mensajes en letreros encima del techo en la 
Federación Nacional de Ciegos. El primero dice "rechaza el racismo," y 
el segundo "postura contra el

odio." Ambos son coherentes con el espíritu y los valores con los que 
intentamos vivir en la Federación. La Federación Nacional de Ciegos me 
ha ayudado

a comprender mejor a aquellos cuyos historiales y experiencias son 
diferentes a las mías. He tenido la oportunidad de pasar tiempo con 
personas ciegas que

no han tenido oportunidades y están luchando por salir adelante. He 
pasado tiempo con personas ciegas que han enfrentado una fuerte 
discriminación que sigue impidiéndo. He pasado tiempo con personas 
ciegas que piensan que nunca han experimentado la discriminación y se 
preguntan qué se siente. Y he dedicado

tiempo con personas ciegas que creen que lo hicieron por su propia 
cuenta y que la labor de nuestro movimiento no les hizo algún provecho. 
Es la Federación la que

me enseñó a encontrar el vínculo común que tenemos en nuestras 
experiencias como personas ciegas y usarlo como una herramienta para la 
promoción de oportunidades para todas las personas ciegas,

entre las que me incluyo. Al buscar, en primer lugar, relacionarme con 
los demás, la Federación ha abierto oportunidades para mí a fin de 
colaborar con personas extraordinarias de las que de otro modo podría

no haber tenido la oportunidad de aprender.

Mientras tratamos de llevar a cabo la labor de la Federación en el seno 
de nuestra gran nación, os anímo a utilizar el aprendizaje que hemos 
obtenido de la Federación para enseñar a los

demás cómo se podría enfocar la creación de nuestras comunidades de la 
mejor manera. La igualdad es un valor que tenemos y es algo que 
comprendemos bien en base a

nuestras experiencias compartidas como personas ciegas. Esta semana me 
he estado preguntando cómo podemos usar ese conocimiento para ayudar a 
otros a reconocer el mismo valor en

el espacio que ocupan en una base diaria. Mientras luchamos para 
averiguar esa difícil cuestión, quisiera sugerir que una de las mejores 
cosas que podemos hacer es continuar

viviendo la filosofía de la Federación en todo lo que hacemos.

Dear Fellow Federationists,

This week I have been thinking a lot about how we carry out the 
activities of the National Federation of the Blind and what broader 
impact the Federation

philosophy might have on society. We value equality, and we work to 
eliminate discrimination based on the characteristic of blindness. 
Although I would

argue that our philosophy about the impact of emphasizing certain 
characteristics over others applies to many other aspects of our 
society. It is certainly

relevant this week as the subject of race has again become a dividing 
factor in our society.

This week we put two messages on the rooftop sign at the National 
Federation of the Blind. The first is "Reject Racism," and the second is 
"Stand Against

Hate." Both of these are consistent with the spirit and values we 
attempt to live in the Federation. The National Federation of the Blind 
has helped me

to better relate to those whose backgrounds and experiences were 
different than mine. I have had the opportunity to spend time with blind 
people who have

had no opportunities and are struggling to get by. I have spent time 
with blind people who have faced significant discrimination that 
continues to hold

them back. I have spent time with blind people who think they have never 
experienced discrimination and they wonder what it feels like. And I 
have spent

time with blind people who believed that they made it on their own and 
that the work of our movement gave them no advantage. It is the 
Federation that

taught me to find the common bond we have in our experiences as blind 
people and to use that as a tool for advancing opportunities for all 
blind people,

including myself. By seeking first to relate to others, the Federation 
has opened up opportunities for me to engage with outstanding people 
that I might

have otherwise never had the chance to learn from.

As we seek to carry out the work of the Federation within our great 
nation, I encourage us to use the learning we have gained from the 
Federation to teach

others how they might approach building our communities in better ways. 
Equality is a value we hold and it is something that we understand well 
based on

our shared experience as blind people. This week I have been asking 
myself how we might use that knowledge to help others recognize that 
same value in

the space they occupy on a daily basis. As we struggle to figure out 
that tricky question, I would suggest that one of the best things we can 
do is continue

to live the Federation philosophy in everything we do.
