El poder de las altas expectativas

Soy ciego de nacimiento. Mis padres trabajaron arduamente para 
garantizar que recibiera una excelente educación y oportunidades para 
triunfar.

Esperaban que yo

sobresaliera y aplicara la filosofía de la Federación en mi educación y 
entrenamiento de rehabilitación. También fui asesorado por adultos 
ciegos competentes

a lo largo de mi educación y

formación. Mi carrera gratificante se deriva directamente de una 
combinación de altas expectativas y excelente tutoría; Ambos distintivos 
de la filosofía

de la Federación. Siempre he disfrutado

construyendo cosas con Legos, juegos de Hot Wheels, y cosas similares, y 
me fue bien en matemáticas y ciencias. En preparación para la 
universidad decidí

estudiar ingeniería civil.

(Quizás, no sea sorprendente ya que mi padre también es ingeniero).

Después de la preparatoria y antes de asistir a la universidad, asistí a 
uno de los centros de formación de la Federación Nacional de Ciegos para 
adaptación y rehabilitación.

Mis padres buscaron oportunidades para encontrar mentores para mí que 
fueran estudiantes y profesionales ciegos exitosos de la universidad a 
través

de la red de

La Federación. Mi entrenamiento de rehabilitación, enseñado por otras 
personas ciegas, me dio importantes habilidades prácticas como leer 
Braille de manera efectiva

y usar acceso

tecnológico, la oportunidad de usar esas habilidades en un entorno 
universitario mientras se está formando, y una actitud fuerte y positiva 
para enfrentar

desafíos y resolver

problemas inesperados. Apliqué todo lo que aprendí cuando comencé mi 
programa de ingeniería en la Universidad de California en Davis.

Cuando comencé mi programa de ingeniería, tuve la suerte de haber 
recibido una beca de la Federación Nacional de Ciegos. El dinero era 
estupendo, por supuesto,

pero también me brindaron oportunidades clave para establecer contactos 
y ser asesorado intensivamente por profesionales ciegos que se 
desempeñan bien

en sus campos elegidos, muchos de los cuales

Lo hacían en ciencias, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas. Fue 
inspirador pasar tiempo con matemáticos ciegos, informáticos, un 
ingeniero mecánico, un ingeniero eléctrico y más, y por supuesto, 
también aprendí de muchos consejos prácticos. Cuando comencé mi primera 
pasantía de ingeniería civil

para el

Departamento de Recursos Hídricos, (California Department of Water 
Resources), sabía que otros hombres y mujeres ciegos también habían 
tenido éxito en el campo y habían abordado los

desafíos que yo tenía para trabajar.

Después de la universidad, también me convertí en uno de esos 
profesionales ciegos de Ciencias, Tecnología,Ingeniería y Matemáticas, 
STEM, trabajando como ingeniero especializado en recursos hídricos.

Obtuve mi licencia de ingeniero profesional

y ahora trabajo para el Cuerpo de Ingenieros del Ejército de los Estados 
Unidos, (US Army Corps of Engineers), que desarrolla soluciones para la 
erosión costera, las inundaciones

de los ríos y los problemas de navegación. La filosofía de la Federación,

el énfasis en las altas expectativas y el enfoque en la mentoría me 
ayudaron en cada paso del camino.
