Subject: FCB 2021 Legislative Award

Hi Brian,
Scott may have already told you he heard on radio that FCB awarded Lisa Lewis their 2021 Legislative Award at our 2021 Convention. HCB also presented her with their Chapter Award.

Doug was asked to get her to Zoom in at the beginning of the Awards Banquet under the pretense of speaking about the importance of voting. She was totally surprised. This past Tuesday, May 18 the physical plaques were presented at the Volusia County Council meeting. Doug worked out the details with Terri Pendarvis the assistant to the County manager. Lisa received a standing ovation from the County Council members and audience.

The presentation below was read by HCB's President Mary Tyson.

Florida Council of the Blind
presents their 2021 Legislative Award to Lisa Lewis
Volusia County Florida’s Supervisor of Elections

Lisa Lewis has been and continues to be a tremendous advocate for people with disabilities, especially those of us who are blind. Lisa goes well beyond her job duties to enable citizens to fully participate in local, statewide, and national elections. Whether a person wishes to vote in person at a local precinct or by mail, Volusia’s Supervisor of Elections has been serving the election needs of the citizens of Florida and her local County for 13 years. She has served as elected Supervisor of Elections (SOE) since 2016.

Since becoming the Supervisor of Elections, Lisa has diligently worked to cross-train her staff, enhance cyber security, conduct open and transparent elections, and has repeatedly promoted accessible voting. She is always willing and available to present at outreach activities, such as the American Council of the Blind’s Legislative seminar, Halifax Council of the Blind’s membership meetings, other blindness-related consumer group meetings, and virtual awareness training of voters who are blind. Last year, when Volusia County conducted a special vote-by-mail, Lisa and her staff set aside a Saturday at City Island Library for use of the ExpressVote. The ExpressVote enabled people with print disabilities to vote independently and in secret on accessible equipment.

In recognition of outstanding service to the Blind of Florida and in appreciation for the unselfish devotion towards a better life for blind persons, Florida Council of the Blind presents its Legislative Award to Lisa Lewis.
Awarded April 30, 2021
Sheila A. Young, President
