</o:shapelayout></xml><![endif]--></head><body lang=EN-US link="#467886" vlink="#96607D" style='word-wrap:break-word'><div class=WordSection1><p class=MsoNormal>October 2023 Minutes <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Greater Daytona Beach Chapter <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>National Federation of the Blind <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The monthly meeting of the Greater Daytona Beach Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind was held on Saturday, October 28. It took place at Houligan’s Restaurant, 1725 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach, Florida. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Vice president Peggy Fleischer called the meeting to order at 1 p. m. Brian Norton was absent due to health issues. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Christine Nodal offered a prayer for the meeting. Scott Larson led both the Pledge of Allegiance and NFB Pledge. Nancy Epps led the One Minute Message. Sherri Adams led the singing of God Bless America. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Peggy welcomed new visitors who have moved to the area from Colorado. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Members introduced themselves from table to table. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The September minutes were tabled. Bill Outman reported all minutes from January forward through August have been submitted to the affiliate. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Nancy Epps then gave the treasurer’s report. Income included $97 for convention bus fares and shirt sales. Expenses included a $75 reimbursement to Scott Larson for convention expenses, PAC to the national office for $50, and a service charge of $0.51. This resulted in total expenses of $125.51. The opening balance was $1,358.29, and the ending balance was $1,329.78. This report was approved. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal> The membership was somewhat unsure of what had been agreed to for the November meeting, but it was believed to be for Nov. 11 at Houligan’s, so that is what Peggy announced as the schedule. The holiday party is set for Dec. 9 at Steve’s Diner at 11 a. m. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>All fares for trips to the state convention have been paid. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Nancy noted she had her laptop with her, so new memberships and email signups can be taken care of. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Peggy encouraged members to think ahead to projects for 2024, as January is usually the time for charting that course. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>She then noted some of the chapter participation in the convention. Scott Larson did his usual good job as a martial, and the chapter helped conduct two technology seminars. Ryan Mann and Peggy Fleischer co-hosted these, one on low vision products and another on VoiceOver for iPhone and also Android technology. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The baskets fetched good levels of funding for the affiliate, and the dollar auction was a success. President Riccobono asked Peggy to write a paper on it so it could possibly be used by national and other affiliates. This auction raised about $850. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>All those up for election to the state board were returned to office. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>A number of members then shared their state convention experiences, including thoughts on the various seminars and exhibit hall. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>There was a leadership seminar at the convention. Sheila King represented our chapter, and will continue getting training in this national program. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Peggy noted it is time to plan for the 2024 Washington Seminar, to be held from Jan. 28-Feb. 1. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The chapter agreed to send a thank you card to Conklin-Davis Center for assisting with convention transportation. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>There was a white cane awareness event at the Career and Technology Training Center the day before the chapter meeting. It was well laid out but not as many participated due to the schedule. It was mostly focused on awareness of the blindness community by public officials. Peggy noted it might be good to have a fund raising table at whatever 2024 event materializes. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Steve Williamson noted it might be useful to have our own white cane event again independent of the one that coincides with DOT Mobility Awareness Week, as this one did. It has been suggested before that there could be more than one event in various locations in the county. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Steve indicated he wished to represent the chapter at the joint planning committee meetings for white cane awareness in 2024. Steve, Scott, and Cliff Rau were appointed to the chapter white cane committee. Scott will be chair. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>October birthdays include Peggy Fleischer and Lacy Ketcham. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Much of the remaining discussion concerned legislative efforts and programs such as talking books and Newsline. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The meeting adjourned at 2:19 p. m. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p></div></body></html>
