Hello, Sunrise and Shine fans!

 

As announced during our last 'Rise and Shine Zoom call, we will not be
holding a get-together tomorrow morning. SRS is still recovering from an
incredibly busy NFB of Florida convention at the amazing Hilton Altamonte
Springs last weekend. I know that there will still be lots of discussion
about the wonderful event and how much fun everyone had, during our next
call scheduled for Thursday, October 23rd at 9:00 AM, EST.

 

We made so many new friends at convention and I am eager to have many of
them join us soon. New faces are always welcome.

Greetings Federation Family and Friends:

It is time for our October chapter meeting, and this month we are having our
election. We will meet Saturday, October 18 at the Center for Independent
Living, 2709 Art Museum Drive, Jacksonville, FL 32207 from 10:00 AM until
Noon. 

Please note, there will be no Zoom for this meeting. Since we are in
In-person organization, we can not have elections over Zoom. Everyone is
encouraged to come in person and be sure to cast your vote for the person
you most want to be in leadership for our great chapter. As a friendly
reminder, you must have already paid your dues for 2025 to be allowed to
vote in this election.

The agenda for the meeting is below this message.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting.

 

The National Federation of the Blind of Florida, Greater Jacksonville
Chapter will meet, Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Jacksonville Center

Good evening, Federation family and friends,

 

On Saturday, October 18th, the Greater Jacksonville Chapter held its monthly
meeting, and as is required in our constitution, during our October meeting
we held elections for multiple Board positions.

 

Our President, Kaye Baker and Board Member, Marty Miller made the tough
decision to not run for the positions they had held for many years. We are
so proud of the accomplishments both Kaye and Marty have made and are
honored by their selfless service to the National Federation of the Blind
and to the blind and low vision communities both in Jacksonville and
throughout Florida.

I am personally indebted to both Kaye and Marty for teaching me so much
during the time that I have known them and have worked with them. On a
personal note, I am also grateful to both Kaye and Marty for their wonderful
friendship.

 

The results of the elections are as follows as well as a listing of all
Board positions.

October is turning out to be an extremely busy month in terms of legislative
advocacy. We met in person during our NFB of Florida Affiliate convention in
Altamonte Springs on October 5th and had a terrific discussion with one
another. Wee had over 30 convention attendees present for the meeting and to
all of you who took time out of your busy schedules to attend, I am truly
grateful.

 

Some extremely important issues have developed since convention, and we all
need to work together to address them immediately. This email will provide
information about an urgent legislative concerns and advocacy meeting that
we will hold tomorrow evening at 7:00 PM and about a follow-up meeting to be
held on Zoom on Tuesday, October 28th at 8:00 PM. Please try and make time
for both meetings if you can.

 

Last evening President Riccobono convened a meeting of Legislative Directors
and Affiliate Presidents. Both Camille Tate and I were in attendance. I
noted that nearly 90 Federationists from around the country were also
present. To lessen my tendency of being redundant, below I'm going to paste
an excerpt from a legislative/news alert released by the National Federation
of the Blind on October 14th. This alert was sent out via our national email
list serve last week and so, perhaps you have seen it recently. The message
contained in the alert will highlight the reason why President Riccobono
felt compelled to gather with Affiliate Presidents and Legislative Directors
last night. 

 

"News alert affecting blind people: Most federal employees within the Office
of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services received Reduction in Force
notices last Friday.

If not reversed, this action will severely undermine the Department of
Education's ability to carry out its legal responsibilities under the
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973,
and the Randolph-Sheppard Act. These laws ensure that blind children receive
Braille and other essential educational services, that blind adults receive
the training necessary for competitive employment, and that blind
entrepreneurs have opportunities to operate businesses on federal
properties.

We call upon the Department of Education to immediately rescind this
reduction in force."

 

We believe that simply calling on the Department of Education to resend the
RIF will not be enough. We believe that our elected officials in the US
House of Representatives and in the US senate need to be urged to put
pressure on the Department of Education to resend its reduction in force
order before harm is done to the critical programs mentioned above. Florida
has 28 US House members and 2 Senators, and we will need your help in trying
to hold in person meetings with all of them by November 7th. Fortunately, at
this time, the US House is not in session and so most Representatives are
back home in district.

 

So now, you are probably getting a good idea of why we are asking you to
join us on such short notice. Some serious work needs to be done, and we
know we are making a big, "ask",  of all of you. This is a time when we as
Federationists come together, develop a plan and tackle an extremely
important issue.

Good morning, Sunrise and Shine family!

 

I was reading through some emails the other day when I noticed someone had
said the words, "this time of year is packed with conventions.". I took a
look around and found that, indeed, many conventions within the blind
community are taking place all over the country. The NFB of Florida, as you
probably know, just concluded its annual gathering in Altamonte Springs on
October 5th and folks are already talking about and laying out plans for the
big soiree in Jacksonville next October.

 

On tomorrow's Sunrise and Shine with NFB-NEWSLINE, we'll recap the recently
concluded convention and rate our experiences. One terrific thing we can
work through tomorrow morning will be our take on the various workshops that
occurred over the busy weekend and then suggest new workshops we'd like to
see next time 'round. I'm going to try and find some agendas from other
conventions that have occurred or that are coming up. Looking at these might
give us some great ideas.

 

No, we won't have a guest speaker tomorrow, but that's just fine, it means
that you will be helping to lead the discussion and will have a chance to
relax and sip on that early morning beverage in your hands. Often, these
calls turn out to be our favorites.

 

I hope you will make time to join us tomorrow morning, it feels good to have
Sunrise and Shine back on a normal schedule of second and forth Thursdays of
each month beginning at 9:00 AM (EST).

 

If you haven't been to one of our calls before, joining us at 9:00 AM for
coffee or tea will give you a chance to find out what you've been missing.
We always take time for welcoming new guest speakers and participants and
for lots of warmth and laughter.

 

Most of us have become pretty familiar with attending meetings using the
Zoom platform over the past few years and in fact, we've been using Zoom
since we launched Rise and Shine way back on April 16th2020. If you're not
used to using Zoom or if it's still giving you difficulties, don't give up

Some extremely important issues have developed since convention, and we all need to work together to address them immediately. This email will provide information about an urgent legislative concerns and advocacy meeting that we will hold tomorrow evening at 7:00 PM and about a follow-up meeting to be held on Zoom on Tuesday, October 28th at 8:00 PM. Please try and make time for both meetings if you can.

Last evening President Riccobono convened a meeting of Legislative Directors and Affiliate Presidents. Both Camille Tate and I were in attendance. I noted that nearly 90 Federationists from around the country were also present. To lessen my tendency of being redundant, below I'm going to paste an excerpt from a legislative/news alert released by the National Federation of the Blind on October 14th. This alert was sent out via our national email list serve last week and so, perhaps you have seen it recently. The message contained in the alert will highlight the reason why President Riccobono felt compelled to gather with Affiliate Presidents and Legislative Directors last night.

"News alert affecting blind people: Most federal employees within the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services received Reduction in Force notices last Friday.

If not reversed, this action will severely undermine the Department of Education's ability to carry out its legal responsibilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Randolph-Sheppard Act. These laws ensure that blind children receive Braille and other essential educational services, that blind adults receive the training necessary for competitive employment, and that blind entrepreneurs have opportunities to operate businesses on federal properties.

We call upon the Department of Education to immediately rescind this reduction in force."

We believe that simply calling on the Department of Education to resend the RIF will not be enough. We believe that our elected officials in the US House of Representatives and in the US senate need to be urged to put pressure on the Department of Education to resend its reduction in force order before harm is done to the critical programs mentioned above. Florida has 28 US House members and 2 Senators, and we will need your help in trying to hold in person meetings with all of them by November 7th. I am using a shell of the legislative concerns meeting announcement sent out last week to construct this mornings email, (trying to save time and trying to avoid re-writing the entire announcement)…that’s why some of it will look familiar. Please do take time to read over this announcement

 

October is turning out to be an extremely busy month in terms of legislative advocacy. We met in person during our NFB of Florida Affiliate convention in Altamonte Springs on October 5th and had a terrific discussion with one another. Florida has 28 US House members and 2 Senators, and we will need your help in trying to hold in person meetings with all of them by November 7th. Fortunately, at this time, the US House is not in session and so most Representatives are back home in district.

 

So now, you are probably getting a good idea of why we are asking you to join us for multiple meetings in October. Some serious work needs to be done, and we know we have make a big, “ask”,  from all of you. This is a time when we as Federationists come together, develop a plan and tackle an extremely important issue.

 

Camille and I should have appointments set for next week with our two US Senators in Washington DC soon, (I’m currently corresponding with their schedulers to find suitable appointment times when we will be on The Hill next Tuesday and Wednesday. We are traveling by train from Jacksonville to Baltimore on Sunday and will return early Thursday morning.

 

Several Affiliate members have told me that they are working towards getting in-person appointments with their US House members here in Florida, while The House is in recess and the Representatives are in district. Many of you have begun calling and emailing your Reps. In order to express your opinions about the Dept. of Education’s reduction in force order. To those of you who have taken action already, we are all extremely grateful. Please email me with information about the actions you have already taken, (keeping track of our actions across the State is an important task for us during this Legislative push).

 

I am attaching to this email, two files that I hope will help you all a great deal. One is the fact sheet developed by our national office that you can use as a guide when contacting your Reps and when meeting with them. The second attachment is an Excel spreadsheet with contact information for all 28 Florida House members. The spreadsheet provides the names, email addresses and phone numbers for the in-state District Directors for each US House member. I used this information myself to direct my contacts with the Reps. In House Districts 4 and 5. I found the information very helpful and hope you will too.

Greetings to all of our members, friends and supporters,

 

We are excited to announce that the Greater Jacksonville Chapter of the
National Federation of the Blind of Florida will hold a regular monthly
meeting this Saturday. Our monthly meetings are normally held on the first
Saturday of each month from 10:00 AM until noon. The upcoming meeting will
be our last regular meeting of 2025, as we do not normally hold meetings in
July or December. Even though we will offer a Zoom connection to the
meeting, we very much hope that you will choose to join us in person. The
Zoom link will be shown at the bottom of this email.

Rotary Club of Bartram Trail/Julington Creek that we hope will benefit your
clients.

Through this project, individuals who are legally blind may apply to receive
a pare of Meta glasses at a reduced rate. These glasses can be instrumental
in assisting blind and low-vision individuals with daily tasks of life such
