[Nfbf-l] DBS missing again!

In a sense I agree with both sentiments. An agency for the blind
should never be permitted to become a caretaker or custodian for
the blind. Their function should be to teach the skills of
blindness which will help a blind person become independent, help
blind people adjust to blindness so they will become willing to
utilize the skills of blindness without embarrassment or
self-conscientness, and to help blind people acquire the training
and education to be successful and contributing members of
society.
Unfortunately, it becomes very easy to adopt a view of blind
agencies as a crutch, without which we, the blind are helpless.
Staff at agencies for the blind can tend to begin thinking of
themselves as custodians or surrogate parents of their clients
and begin making decisions and choices for the blind. This we
cannot tolerate. Agencies for the blind must always focus on the
end game-independence for the blind. Sorry for the rant, but I
am quite passionate about this issue. I'll get off my soapbox
now.
