ORLANDO -- The LYNX Board has finalized a second round of route cuts in a
push to save money.
Starting Dec. 7, several LYNX routes are being cut; others are seeing
service cut back because of a low number of riders. Some routes will see more
busses because of an increase in demand.
The changes, along with others announced earlier this year, are expected to
save the agency more than $3 million.
A final round of cuts and changes is slated for April 2009.
December Realignment Plan
* Discontinue - Links 5, 12, 43, 52, 53 and 414 due to their poor
performance and high operating costs.
* Improve efficiencies - Links 3, 6, 11, 13, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24,
26, 51, 405 and 442 through realignments and schedule adjustments.
* Implement an additional PickUpLine type service in northern
Poinciana.
* Increase service frequencies on Link 125 due to overcrowded
conditions.
* Link 10 – two additional evening trips are being added.
* Link 6 – restructure to operate from Colonial Plaza to Dixie Bell
Drive and Gatlin Avenue with the portion from LYNX Central Station (LCS) to
Colonial Plaza being provided by a new Link 313. Link 313 would operate from LCS
to Colonial Plaza along the existing alignment of Link 6, and on to the VA
Clinic. The loop on Link 6 outbound of Dixie Bell Drive and Gatlin Avenue
would be covered by extending the loop on Link 3.
* Links 13, 20 and 24 – reduce frequencies to 60-minutes.
* Links 11 and 51 – streamline with more direct routes into Orlando
International Airport (OIA) for efficiency.
* Links 19 and 22 – would become the new Link 319 for efficiency. Link
319 would operate every twenty minutes on the alignment of the previous
existing Link 19-22 that operates in the evenings and weekends in place of the
two Links.
* Link 21 – realign to travel from Universal Employment Center, south
on Turkey Lake Road to the Dr. Phillips Hospital, which would lose service
from discontinuing Link 43.
* Link 18 – realign along Florida Parkway, Osceola Parkway and
Michigan Avenue to cover the higher ridership portions of the eliminated Link 12.
* Link 26 (northern portion) - the Northern portion of Link 26 will
still service Thacker Avenue and Osceola High School. The Southern portion
will no longer serve Koa Street, San Lorenzo Road and Monterey Road, but will
continue to serve the Poinciana Community Center, Walnut Street and Country
Club Road and the WalMart at Cypress Parkway and Doverplum Avenue. The
figure eight portion of Link 26 will be replaced with a new PickUpLine.
* Link 426 will be a new Link operating two morning peak trips and two
evening peak trips along the entire existing alignment of the current Link
26. This Link has been designed to accommodate demand associated with the
PickUpLine service and will offer increased service levels throughout the
existing Link 26.
* Link 405 – minor schedule adjustments.
* Link 442 – extend into Winter Garden to cover portions of the
discontinued Link 53.
Other changes will include expanding evening service on Link 50 in the Walt
Disney World Resort (WDW) area. Evening service on Links 301, 302, 303 and
304, also known as 3D service routes will be eliminated. The morning and
afternoon trips on the 3D Directs will remain.
Additional changes in the Disney area will include expanding service hours
on Link 56 and a new Link 111. This link will operate from OIA to WDW via the
Florida Mall and the Canadian Court SuperStop. These changes and the
appropriate funding were provided by Walt Disney World as part of the I-4 mitigation
funding announced on April 24, 2008.
