[Nfbf-l] Outlook compatibility patch

Hello Holly, 
Normally, I leave these questions  to the resident computer expert on the
list, Jim Ellsworth <smile>. But since he does not have access to Outlook
Express, I thought I would take a look to see if leaving e-mail on the
server is an option within this application.

I have access to Outlook Express on  my Windows XP Home PC. I looked in the
Accounts dialog and there is no way to tell Outlook Express to leave the
messages on the server rather than downloading them to your PC, as Jim has
discussed below. So, there is simply no way you can use Outlook Express on
multiple systems and leave the messages out on the server so that they can
be accessed by each PC running Outlook Express. As for Windows Mail, I have
never used this either and do not know if you can do this via Windows Mail.
But none the less, if you only have this application on the new system with
Outlook Express on the others, then there is simply not going to be a way to
maintain e-mail messages on all systems. If there is an option within
Windows Mail to leave e-mail messages on the server, then you may be able to
download and install windows Mail on the older system(s). I don't know if
you can actually do this, so, your Dad would need to check on the Microsoft
web site to be sure. 

However, if you can use Microsoft outlook on each PC, then there is an
option that you can check when setting up your e-mail account that tells
Outlook to leave copies of messages on the mail server. This would mean that
each PC would have to be running Outlook with identical e-mail settings,
including the setting to leave mail on the server. At one time, you could
purchase Outlook as a stand-alone application, but I don't know if this is
still an option after the release of Office 2007.

The only other option is to use the web mail client for your specific e-mail
provider or ISP. The only drawback to this option is that you will not be
able to download e-mail directly to your PC and will have to leave it on the
server for an extended period of time. As Jim has cautioned below, this
would mean you would run the risk of losing mail any time your e-mail
provider purges the server of old messages.

In the end, his best bet is to decide which system he likes best and use
that as his source for reading and composing e-mail. He would not run the
risk of losing old messages due to their being purged from the e-mail server
and there would not be the problem of trying to keep each system
synchronized with the others. I know this is not the answer he was hoping
for, but I'm afraid it's the only answer I have.

If he wants to get the same messages on more than one computer there is a
slight problem which I will explain but there might also be a solution.

Normally when you download your mail to your computer it automatically gets
deleted off of the service provider's server.  This happens so that all that
mail doesn't just sit up there and accumulate eventually overloading the
server's capacity.  So, this means once the messages have been downloaded
they are no longer there so can't be downloaded on a different computer
again.  Most people don't want the same messages on more than one machine
but if he does want to do that there might be a way to make it happen.

I don't have Outlook Express and I don't use Windows Mail but if you look
through the menus, probably someplace like tools, options etc, you may find
an option to leave messages on the server after they are downloaded.  If you
do find this option I would only do it on one computer and make sure that
you use that machine to download the mail first.  That way when he goes to
the other computer he should be able to get his mail again if he wants.  I
must caution you though that if the mail is left there on the server to
accumulate eventually you will get some kind of notification from your
service provider telling you that you have reached your quota.  I'm not sure
the option mentioned above even exists in either Outlook Express or Windows
Mail but it's worth looking.

Does anyone know how to get messages on Outlook Express and Window Mail
(Vista) on two different computers at the same time? My father has a new
computer and it has Vista on it. Vista uses Windows Mail instead of Outlook
Express. He has a laptop and two desk top computers within his house for
different uses. He would like to be able to check, read and store his
messages on all the computers not just the one with Vista. Any help would be
great.
