Marion, you and others from the East Hillsborough as well as Sherrill did a
wonderful project by collecting products for the homeless, cold and
down-trodden. Thank you for your spirit of volunteerism as well as that of
other members. Here in Louisiana, we did a food drive for needy families and
we all gathered at the Louisiana Center for the Blind to watch history in
the making as Barak Obama took the oath of office as our new president. I
couldn't stop the tears from flowing and it was so great to observe the
goings on with my fellow classmates.

Marilyn,
    It was such an honor to be of service! I also want to thank Sherril
O'Brien, Lloyd Mathews, Janice Butler, and Merry Schoch for their generosity
on behalf of the NFB. In addition to those of us from the Federation,
several people from New Life Unity church showed up to help with packing and
sorting items. A group, as Sherrill Mentioned, from the Florida Network on
Disabilities, which will prove to be a great ally to us in the future, and a
number of individuals from the general community pitched in. We received a
steady flow of donations of personal hygiene products and warm clothing, as
people just dropped in and gave us items. A team of about eight people from
the church hit the road about 3:00 and distributed the items just in time
for some of the coldest weather of the season. I am certain they will be put
to great use. All tolled, about 150 hours of service was donated through
this one event. The NFB organized more than 20 events in recognition of the
National Day of Service!
    It sure does warm the heart on a very cold night to know that the spirit
of volunteerism is alive and well. It gives me a great deal of hope that the
good that is present in the world far outweighs the appearance of that which
is negative. That hope has been re-ignited by our President-elect! I hope
every person is watching history in the making tomorrow as we usher in a new
era of service and respect for all of humankind! God bless Barak obama!
