GOVERNOR'S PRESS OFFICE

TALLAHASSEE – Governor Charlie Crist today recognized Cheryl Stone of
Orlando as this week’s Point of Light in honor of Disability Awareness Month.
“Through Cheryl’s dedication to fighting for the needs of the disabled
community, she continues to increase awareness for those in the Orlando area
with disabilities and their families,” said Governor Crist. “Her commitment
has enhanced access to an independent way of life for Florida’s citizens
with disabilities.”
Cheryl currently volunteers as the president of the Central Florida Center
for Independent Living. She has also served on the Commission for the
Transportation Disadvantaged, the Governor’s Commission on Disabilities, served
as a program consultant for Metroplan Orlando, as well as been a member of
numerous other associations that campaign on behalf of Floridians with
disabilities. In addition, Cheryl has implemented many projects for the
metropolitan planning organization in the Orlando Urban Area. As a result of her
strong commitment, Cheryl has received name recognition throughout the
transportation disadvantaged community in Florida for her work to increase
reliable transportation for citizens with disabilities.
“Cheryl is a most deserving recipient of Governor Crist’s Point of Light
award,” said Lance Block, Chair of the Governor’s Commission on
Disabilities. “Whether it be advocating for transportation improvements, greater
access to independent living, or serving on the Governor’s Commission on
Disabilities, Cheryl is one of Florida’s leading advocates for persons with
disabilities.”
Cheryl has worked for more than 30 years as a medical technologist with a
specialty in clinical microbiology. Her volunteer advocacy for citizens with
disabilities began as a response to the difficulty she faced when
attempting to find reliable transportation to and from work each day for herself.
This struggle inspired Cheryl to help Floridians with disabilities to gain a
more independent lifestyle. She has devoted her life to advocating for
those in the disabled community and has instilled in all who know her the
lesson of hard work to achieve one’s goals.
CSX and AAA Auto Club South are supporting sponsors of the Governor’s
Points of Light Award. This program recognizes Florida residents who
demonstrate exemplary service to the community. Award recipients are announced
weekly. A panel of judges comprised of leaders in the areas of volunteerism and
service evaluate all nominations and make recommendations to the Governor.
The Volunteer Florida Foundation manages the program. For more information,
