Hi all,
Finally, the U S Mint will release the Louis Braille commemorative coin at a
ceremony at NFB headquarters in Baltimore. This will happen a little before
noon tomorrow. There are two types of coin for purchase. One is called
Uncirculated, and is meant to be taken out of its case and touched. It's a
regular coin, but not of the quality of the coin called a Proof. The proof
is pretty much meant to live in its case, and is meant more for serious
collectors. It's several dollars more than the uncirculated one. Both the
Mint and the NFB Independence Market will sell them. There's also a less
expensive introductory price for both, which lasts from tomorrow till the
26th of April. Then the price goes up a couple dollars on both. I'll send
out the pricing info. After tomorrow, you can certainly call NFB's national
office at (410) 659-9314, and ask to speak with someone at the Independence
Market, and order coins by phone.
I was touched by this quote from President Maurer:
"If the blind can read, the blind can achieve. The Louis Braille
Bicentennial silver dollar celebrates the man who gave literacy to the
blind, and is a unique and beautiful keepsake. But it is also a coin with a
mission: to make sure that every blind child and every adult losing vision
in our nation has the opportunity to learn Braille."
