[Nfbf-l] Amtrak

The Keep In Sight ticket issue came up a few years ago, on this listserv, and it was resolved then. I'll tell you what I know: All the tickets that I've ever seen (and believe me, I've looked) say KEEP IN SIGHT. It means to KEEP THE TICKET in sight...meaning above each seat. They (meaning the conductors) can't keep blind people in their sight when they don't even stay in the cars. You'd have to have the ticket pinned to your lapel to make it effective. You aren't allowed to remove it, from the clip above the seat, and IF you were to change seats the conductor takes the ticket and puts it above your new seat. The conductor writes your destination on a white ticket and groups people going to the same destination, together. It has nothing to do with anyone being blind vs. sighted. I asked the conductor AND called Amtrak and got this same answer.

Correct me IF I'm wrong. Let's not get our feathers ruffled for no reason at all. We've got bigger fish to fry and bigger battles to win.

Doesn't the NFBF have a page on Facebook? I can't seem to find it. I found the
allahassee chapter page, but that's all. If we don't have one, we should set up
ne. I don't know how to do it, or I would do it myself.

Holly, people say we are living in 21st century. I am not sure what century
hey are in.
It's not related but I have felt disgustingly helpless on air tran flights
s I am traveling frequently between Atlanta and Orlando. Interestingly I
evver had issues with Air tran staff based in Orlando but the Atlanta
eople take me as a liability. Once I had to wait for 35 minutes before
omebody managed to come to take me to the baggage claim area from the
ircraft. The other day one guy boarded me in the train and left saying this
rain will leave you there. While leaving he told a passenger to tell me
hen the the train reached baggage claim.
While departing from Atlanta, one evening, the gate agent said she will help
e boarding. She finished boarding and started announcing for my name. When
reached her and reminded that she herself told me to wait she said we are
ine and the plane is still there.
On my most recent flight, I lost my Victor Reader Stream. When I called them
o report the loss I was told that I didn't actually fly that day. The gate
gent had put a "no show" for me. So before I faxed my boarding pass they
ould not believe I flew that evening. If there was a plane crash, I
ouldn't have officially died, but wouldn't be living either.

t's not funny. I am contemplating a legal action. I wish I had some lawyer
o take care of this this sucking attitude. I so much want to misspell
sucking'.

Tara and Holly,
have traveled with both travel services and have never had any problems.
am not saying that you didn't have all of your very frustrating
xperiences Tara, and have a right to be frustrated and contemplating a
awsuit, I am just saying that I have never encountered such difficculties
ersonally with these companies. Holly, I am a bit surprised by the blue and
hite cloths you receive from the staff on Am Trak. I haven''t experienced
his either as I have traveled Am Trak many times throughout the years from
rlando to Jax, as well as Orlando to Washington,D.C. sevveral times as
ell. I can imagine how embarrased this treatment must feel to you as it
ould really piss me off! I have always asked for ground assistance evvery
ime I travel, so I am at a point of concern as to whether this kind of
reatment is simply a hit and a miss with the Blind community or what, as
our situations are real and valid, as are mine never having these problems
n these specific travel companies! KH

Hello, friends,
I haven't traveled on Amtrak in some time. However, air transportation gets
ixed reviews from me, I think mostly better than it used to be. For
xample, I've been in situations where airport personnel used to insist that
get into a wheelchair when I arrived at my destination. Recently, it
eems, if people have tried to do that, all it has taken is me letting them
now that I prefer to walk, and that's been the end of it. If I am making
ight, quick connections between flights, I really have no problem receiving
elp from personnel in getting from one gate to the next. In fact,
ometimes I get anxious if I am asked to wait while everyone else is
eplaning, thinking I might miss my next flight. Sometimes I have even been
nown to get off with everyone else and just ask gate personnel inside the
erminal where my next flight leaves from.

Neither did I when I was not traveling as much. Or probably I didn't feel

Okay the slips of paper are placed above each persons seat. This is
one by the person who seats you or the person who takes your ticket.
ost people don't even see it. I have the green slips that were put
ver my seats when I went to convention in Boca and the blue ones that
ere over my seats today.

You just need to document it. Then you need to see if you can keep the
abel. Maybe take a picture of it! In my opinion, you are right.
While I'm at it, Holly, thanks for showing such loyalty and going to all the
rouble to come to the chapter meeting. It amazes me that you went to such
rouble, yet those who live in Orlando can't seem to make it to the meeting.
It was, however, a good meeting. Great job Dwight!

I am on Amtrak right now. The employees put a white tag over my neighbors
seat but a blue on over my seat. It states where I am getting off the
 train
on one side. On the other side it states KEEP IN SIGHT, SEAT CHECK
 /DEST.
The white label states seat check /dest, but does not state keep in sight.
This morning I had a white label over my seat. This afternoon, I have a
 blue
 on.
I feel like a child, being followed to the bathroom, the other cars, etc.
I was not given a choice in the color of label that is over my seat. I
 think
 I can say discrimination.

Hello Kirk,
Yes, I think good and bad experiences are hit or miss depending on the
ndividual who is helping you. I have had drastically opposite experiences
rom the same airline. I contacted them to just inform them of my problem
nd they sent me a $50 gift certificate! I hadn'ta asked for any
ompensation, I just wanted them to be informed so the problem wouldn't
appen again.
Now when traveling I don't ask for assistance from the provider I just work
y way through the airport by asking other passengers for directions.

Mark, I am one who lost his sight at 42 years of age, many years of sight
rior to my blindness gave me a different perspecctive of many issues that
fter 16 years of observing our blind community has made me realize the
ajor differences between legal blindness and total blindness from birth! I
elieve that if we all respected and better understood the majority of our
opulation which is sighted, we would understand why, in their eyes, we
tand out from the majority of people in airports, bus stations, and train
tations , Etc. The reason I say this is that I have no pproblem about
sking for assistance when needed as whenever i needed the same as a sighted
erson, it never bothered me either. When we look at our situations
ifferently and as the sighted community would, we can simply say that we
ayed for these employees to take care of us while we are in their hands, so
hy not take full advantage of our money for our fares! I guess my
ensitivity about waiting for the plane to clear before I disembark is
ormally no problem for me when asked nor is it for using a wheellchair to
et across these large facilities. I like the wheellchair as I can stack my
uggage on my lap and swiftly tote along and with my legs not in the best
f shape, the chair is a relief. I also feel comfortable asking for ground
ssistance when I need to get to where I need to be next without feeling
ike I'm being pressured to prove myself or given special attention away
rom the rest of the passengers! I guess it is all in perspecctive, as I am
egally blind, not totally blind where I might be more sensitive to these
ncounters by staff! I hope I haven't offended anyone with my comments, but
iving 42 years from within the 20/20 world of sight, mixing amongst them,
orking as part of them, I can appreciate their insights, attitudes and
eactions about us still! I sure hope my opinion here hasen't offended any
f my friends and my fight to change any wrongs from the sighted world on
ur behalf will always be a priority that I will fight till the end of time!

ello, friends,
I haven't traveled on Amtrak in some time.

Holly, people say we are living in 21st century. I am not sure what
 century
 they are in.

It's not related but I have felt disgustingly helpless on air tran flights
as I am traveling frequently between Atlanta and Orlando. Interestingly I
nevver had issues with Air tran staff based in Orlando but the Atlanta
people take me as a liability. Once I had to wait for 35 minutes before
somebody managed to come to take me to the baggage claim area from the
aircraft. The other day one guy boarded me in the train and left saying
 this
train will leave you there. While leaving he told a passenger to tell me
when the the train reached baggage claim.

While departing from Atlanta, one evening, the gate agent said she will
 help
me boarding. She finished boarding and started announcing for my name.
 When
I reached her and reminded that she herself told me to wait she said we
 are
fine and the plane is still there.

On my most recent flight, I lost my Victor Reader Stream. When I called
 them
to report the loss I was told that I didn't actually fly that day. The
 gate
agent had put a "no show" for me. So before I faxed my boarding pass they
would not believe I flew that evening. If there was a plane crash, I
wouldn't have officially died, but wouldn't be living either.

It's not funny. I am contemplating a legal action. I wish I had some
 lawyer
to take care of this this sucking attitude. I so much want to misspell
 'sucking'.

to report the loss I was told that I didn't actually fly that day. The
 gate
agent had put a "no show" for me. So before I faxed my boarding pass they
would not believe I flew that evening. If there was a plane crash, I
wouldn't have officially died, but wouldn't be living either.

It's not funny. I am contemplating a legal action. I wish I had some
 lawyer
to take care of this this sucking attitude. I so much want to misspell
 'sucking'.

Holly, and they never even had the courtesy to inform you that they were
lacing them on your seat? Hmm! I believe we talked about this issue before
uite some time ago. Didn't you check Am Trak's policy and procedure about
his tagging issue then? Let me know! KH

kay the slips of paper are placed above each persons seat. This is
one by the person who seats you or the person who takes your ticket.
ost people don't even see it. I have the green slips that were put

Hi Tara,
The way we are treated at air ports is kind of person-dependent. It just
epends on the customer service agent you get! It's ridiculous that they
aid that you weren't even flying that day! How absurd. I'd go forward with
our action. Sorry about the loss of your Stream.

Holly, people say we are living in 21st century. I am not sure what
 century they are in.

It's not related but I have felt disgustingly helpless on air tran flights
as I am traveling frequently between Atlanta and Orlando. Interestingly I
nevver had issues with Air tran staff based in Orlando but the Atlanta
people take me as a liability. Once I had to wait for 35 minutes before
somebody managed to come to take me to the baggage claim area from the
aircraft. The other day one guy boarded me in the train and left saying
this train will leave you there. While leaving he told a passenger to tell
me when the the train reached baggage claim.

While departing from Atlanta, one evening, the gate agent said she will
help me boarding. She finished boarding and started announcing for my
name. When I reached her and reminded that she herself told me to wait she
said we are fine and the plane is still there.

I'm probably going to make this whole discussion even more controversial,
ut a lot of times, if you appear to have vision, even if you don't, you get
reated differently. Usually, people just assume you can see and they don't
ive you much help unless you insist. If you are totally blind and it is
bvious, you get treated like you have a mental challenge as well. The
olitically correct language is in honor of my daughter Robin, who will not
ven see this e-mail. The reason Kirk that you have not experience this
ondescending treatment is because you are NOT totally blind!

nd they sent me a $50 gift certificate! I hadn'ta asked for any
ompensation, I just wanted them to be informed so the problem wouldn't
appen again.
Now when traveling I don't ask for assistance from the provider I just work
y way through the airport by asking other passengers for directions.

That's terrific that you saved the tags. They will be proof should you
ecide to file a complaint with Amtrak.

Sherri, I made a commitment and I follow through. I made it to the
 train station in time to
check the 1:50 train. I got to Deland by 3:20.
I have the green ones from before and the blue labels from today.

Sherri, I agree with your advice to Tara as long as he does it not as a
lind/disabled issue but as a passenger issue! I don't believe it would
ave mattered if he were sighted or blind when the clerk advised him he
asn't even on the flight! What a mess! It sounded to me like a computer

i Tara,
The way we are treated at air ports is kind of person-dependent. It just
epends on the customer service agent you get!

On my most recent flight, I lost my Victor Reader Stream. When I called
them to report the loss I was told that I didn't actually fly that day.
The gate agent had put a "no show" for me. So before I faxed my boarding
pass they would not believe I flew that evening. If there was a plane
crash, I wouldn't have officially died, but wouldn't be living either.

It's not funny. I am contemplating a legal action. I wish I had some
lawyer to take care of this this sucking attitude. I so much want to
 misspell 'sucking'.

Sherri, with all due respect, I have received this treatment! What I am
rying to say however is it is their (the sighted) ignorance of our
isability more than it is a deliberate need to demean or belittle us or
nything else. I always travel with my white cane and use sunglasses as well
o not to offend anyone with sight by not being able to look in their eyes
o discuss anything with them. I only know about this not by being told
bout how the sighted look in each others eyes, but by living it for all the
ears I had mentioned earlier! I am still approached many times as a total
y the sighted community and their lack of being educated about who, and
ow we live, and have been treated poorly by some. I am just trying to let
ll understand that it is the ignorance from the sighted community, not
ll, but enough to upset many of us! Just as it is in their sighted world,
ome rude and ignorant individuals can create bad relationships and opinions
or them all!

'm probably going to make this whole discussion even more controversial,
ut a lot of times, if you appear to have vision, even if you don't, you get
reated differently.

I have traveled with both travel services and have never had any
 problems.
I am not saying that you didn't have all of your very frustrating
experiences Tara, and have a right to be frustrated and contemplating a
lawsuit, I am just saying that I have never encountered such difficculties
personally with these companies. Holly, I am a bit surprised by the blue
 and
white cloths you receive from the staff on Am Trak. I haven''t experienced
this either as I have traveled Am Trak many times throughout the years
 from
Orlando to Jax, as well as Orlando to Washington,D.C. sevveral times as
well. I can imagine how embarrased this treatment must feel to you as it
would really piss me off! I have always asked for ground assistance evvery
time I travel, so I am at a point of concern as to whether this kind of
treatment is simply a hit and a miss with the Blind community or what, as
your situations are real and valid, as are mine never having these
 problems
on these specific travel companies! KH

Neither did I when I was not traveling as much. Or probably I didn't feel
that way. I have problems only with Atlanta based staff, I think I made
 that
 clear.

 Thanks

Some of it is not insight on their part, however. Some of it is just
gnorance. Having said that, I have no problem being given that choice of
sking for help or not doing so, and let's face it, in big airports, I don't
hink I should have to prove myself either, and I will ask for assistance.
think that is perfectly acceptable and one should feel no shame about
hat. But it is the idea that the power of choice can be taken away from us
f we are not careful. We should be the ones who should make those choices,
ot necessarily a well-meaning staff person who thinks they know what's
est. Also, as far as taking a wheelchair goes, everyone has different
eeds. If your legs aren't in the best of shape, then I think it is
erfectly respectable to take a wheelchair. I am just saying that I
ersonally kind of like to walk for various reasons, and probably ought to
e doing more of it anyway, so I prefer not to use a wheelchair.

Mark, I am one who lost his sight at 42 years of age, many years of sight
prior to my blindness gave me a different perspecctive of many issues that
after 16 years of observing our blind community has made me realize the
major differences between legal blindness and total blindness from birth!
 I
believe that if we all respected and better understood the majority of
 our
population which is sighted, we would understand why, in their eyes, we
stand out from the majority of people in airports, bus stations, and
 train
stations , Etc. The reason I say this is that I have no pproblem about
asking for assistance when needed as whenever i needed the same as a
 sighted
person, it never bothered me either. When we look at our situations
differently and as the sighted community would, we can simply say that we
payed for these employees to take care of us while we are in their hands,
 so
why not take full advantage of our money for our fares! I guess my
sensitivity about waiting for the plane to clear before I disembark is
normally no problem for me when asked nor is it for using a wheellchair to
get across these large facilities. I like the wheellchair as I can stack
 my
luggage on my lap and swiftly tote along and with my legs not in the best
of shape, the chair is a relief. I also feel comfortable asking for ground
assistance when I need to get to where I need to be next without feeling
like I'm being pressured to prove myself or given special attention away
from the rest of the passengers! I guess it is all in perspecctive, as I
 am
legally blind, not totally blind where I might be more sensitive to these
encounters by staff! I hope I haven't offended anyone with my comments,
 but
living 42 years from within the 20/20 world of sight, mixing amongst them,
working as part of them, I can appreciate their insights, attitudes and
reactions about us still! I sure hope my opinion here hasen't offended any
of my friends and my fight to change any wrongs from the sighted world on
our behalf will always be a priority that I will fight till the end of
 time!

 Hello, friends,

I haven't traveled on Amtrak in some time. However, air transportation
 gets
mixed reviews from me, I think mostly better than it used to be. For
example, I've been in situations where airport personnel used to insist
 that
I get into a wheelchair when I arrived at my destination. Recently, it
seems, if people have tried to do that, all it has taken is me letting
 them
know that I prefer to walk, and that's been the end of it. If I am making
tight, quick connections between flights, I really have no problem
 receiving
help from personnel in getting from one gate to the next. In fact,
sometimes I get anxious if I am asked to wait while everyone else is
deplaning, thinking I might miss my next flight. Sometimes I have even
 been
known to get off with everyone else and just ask gate personnel inside the
terminal where my next flight leaves from.

 Kirk,
I for one love the Atlanta Airport. I get the assistance I need when I
did it and I love that airport. If I don't want assistance, I don't
 have to use it.

My husband and I have done a lot of traveling, by bus, AM track, plane, and
ruises by ourselves. We a very grateful for the assistants we receive on all
f them. After all we are not too proud to accept help. We figure, we don't
ave to prove to anyone that we could do most of these things ourselves, but
hy? We are both totally blind so instead of acting and looking like we are
entally retarded, we ask for help on things that are almost impossible. Like
getting to the baggage area and looking for our baggage, getting to the right
ate for the bus, getting help in getting to a cab, showing us where things are.
We are very independent people as anyone who knows us will definitely agree.
he moral of this story is accept help with graciousness and you will be a
etter person for it.

olly, people say we are living in 21st century.

I so much want to misspell
sucking'.

Well the other day I told an Orlando based Air Tran crew member that Atlanta
ased Air Tran staff sucks. He actually agreed. I think you are right. I am
ot sure it is because of the bad work culture or because they are just too
usy.
never flew to atlanta without a sighted companion before this June so
ever faced such an issue.
Thanks

I agree Sherri. Still somehow I have always found commendible service in
rlando airport. Atlanta has been mixed but more towards bad side.

 Hi Tara,

The way we are treated at air ports is kind of person-dependent. It just
depends on the customer service agent you get! It's ridiculous that they
said that you weren't even flying that day! How absurd. I'd go forward
with your action. Sorry about the loss of your Stream.

We all have and make our own choices about what we feel is right for
s. Amtrak's policy, if I understand it correctly, is to place this
ag about the seat to assist if there is an accident or emergency.
owever, they don't place "Keep In Sight" tags over the seats of the
lderly or children. Even the lady across the isle from me today, she
sed a wheelchair to get on the train, transfered out of it and she
ad a white tag above her seat. Okay, some one will be thinking that
he tags indicated the destination. however, that lady and I both got
ff at the same stop, Deland. Now, the ride this morning to Orlando, I
ad a white tag just like everyone else. So, I agree, we all have
ifferent experiences. Hell, I had two different experiences in one
ay.
I am not judging anyone for the level of assistance they might need.
here are times that I don't want or need accommodations and should
ot be forced to take them. That is all I am saying. I love riding
mtrak, it is cheaper and quicker, with more space then Greyhound. I
ust don't like how they label me.

Holly,
Yes, let me know what your going to do with the blue ticket as well.
I have a discrimination suit I am thinking about taking up too. I'll keep
t short.
I was at a hamburger place about a week ago with my Guide Dog. I was
itting there just enjoying my filet fish, fries, and shake. I was the only
lind person in the whole place and it was packed with sighted people.
All of a sudden I felt my guide dog move and heard her chomping on
omething. I reached down and sure enough she was swallowing something. I
tood up and pulled her out from under the table. I immediately placed my
ingers half way down her throat and grabbed what seemed to be a piece of
read.
immediately asked for the manager and asked people around me who fed my
uide dog.
ne of the patrons said,
a restaurant clerk"
I then asked every customer that witnessed it to sign a piece of paper with
heir name, address and phone number.
now have a witness list with 18 people on it and took it to my lawyer. I
lso went outside a couple hours later and had her do her business.
I asked a customer to look to see if there were any sesame seeds in her
urd, (as this Restaurant has them on their buns) and the customer said
yes"
I took out my cell phone and took a picture. I then wrapped it up in
lastic so paper wouldn't contaminate my proof.
t is in my freezer now (hope nobody that comes over thinks it's a hot dog
nd eats it). I have my lawyer flying to the sesame seed farm now and we're
oing to do DNA on my guide dogs saved turd with sesame seeds in it and
ompare it to this Restaurants.
So Yes, save all your proof and I'll let you all know how it comes out,
aybe we'll get in the newspaper.
'll be sure to donate some of the cash towards training Amtrak and Airport
mployees on how to be more considerate towards the blind.

Sherri, I made a commitment and I follow through. I made it to the
 train station in time to
check the 1:50 train. I got to Deland by 3:20.
I have the green ones from before and the blue labels from today.
