Ah, but we are not nearly as spread out as we could be. True, the average
density of the American continent is quite low compared with most of Europe.
But we are not as spread out as the population of Australia and they have a
very healthy rail program. Aussies who come to this country are appalled by
how primitive we are in terms of mass transit. I could probably say the same
thing about parts of Canada. Remember that more than 50 per cent of our
country's population lives within 50 miles of one of our coasts.
