Hi All.

I forwarded an email yesterday that I received pertaining to the Braile Sense, and a possible glych in the latest update. Apparently there has been some confusion about this, so I'm sharing another email I received which addresses this concern.

One of HIMS' representatives has provided helpful detailed information on the upgrade for the Braille Sense Plus and clarified that saving the data elsewhere typically presents no problems. Please see below.

Hello

It has come to my attention that you have publicly expressed some concerns about our 6.2 update, and have recommended that users beware of going ahead with it until they speak with us, due to the inability to restore data. I would like to explain the specific circumstances surrounding the problem, so that you may distribute accurate information to your product users.

In very rare cases, specifically on braille Sense PLUS units which have recently had a flashdisk replacement, the reformat of the flashdisk is not successful, and does not allow for the restoration of data. This problem is fixable by connecting the unit to a PC and running a couple of disk formats in Windows. Anyone experiencing this problem should call HIMS technical support for instructions as they should use specific format settings on the PC.

it should be noted that this problem is not at all a common occurrence, and, in fact, we've seen it a total of 3 times since releasing the update. in addition, it only applies to Braille Sense PLUS users, and only to those who have had a recent flashdisk replacement. The developers are already working on a more automated solution than the Windows format option, however, if anyone experiences this problem, all they must do is call technical support and we can give them specific instructions for fixing the problem.

Please remember, as the instructions clearly state, users should back up their data before performing the upgrade, so even if the problem occurrs, once we walk them through the fix, they can restore the data.

Regardless, all Braille Sense PLUS, Braille Sense PLUS QWERTY, Braille Sense OnHand, and Voice Sense QWERTY users must perform a reformat of their flashdisk after the upgrade to accommodate the NLS partition. And even Voice Sense and braille Sense Classic users should back up data in case any problems arise. (This is clearly stated in the upgrade instructions.)

Note: the Backup/Restore option in the Utilities Menu of the Sense Notetakers is specifically labeled, "Backup/Restore personalized settings", and this is all it does. To backup the data, you must use the File Manager to copy the data to an external storage device, or connect the unit to a PC, and copy via the PC..

If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,
