  Bi-Partisan Group of Senators Endorse United Nations Disability Treaty
  As we reported last week, the White House announced its intent to send the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to the Senate for ratification. This week, a bi-partisan group of Senators fully endorsed the treaty. Senators who have announced their support include: John McCain (R-AZ), Dick Durbin (D-IL.), Jerry Moran (R-KS.), Tom Harkin (D-IA), John Barrasso (R-WY.), Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Tom Udall (D-NM).   U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Releases Funds For Family-to-Family Health Information Centers
  The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently announced that $4.9 million in funds from the Affordable Care Act (ACA) would be granted to support Family-to-Family Health Information Centers. These centers are primarily run by and for families with children who have special health care needs. Learn more about the grantees at hrsa.gov.
   
  Department of Education Releases Notice for Technology and Media Services for Individuals with Disabilities
  The U.S. Department of Education (DOE), Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) recently released a notice of funding for programs related to technology and media services for people with disabilities. The purpose of the program is to: (1) Improve results for students with disabilities by promoting the development, demonstration, and use of technology; (2) support educational media services activities designed to be of educational value in the classroom for students with disabilities; and (3) provide support for captioning and video description that is appropriate for use in the classroom.   Federal Initiative to Move Elderly and People with Disabilities into the Community Falters
  A new report from Kaiser Health News has shown that the multi-billion dollar federal initiative to move low-income elderly and people with disabilities from long-term care facilities into the community has not met its goals. Learn more from Kaiser Health News.

  Washington, DC Metro Unveils New Vehicles for Accessible Service
  This week, the Washington, DC Metro unveiled sixteen state-of-the-art vehicles that have been build specifically for accessible services. These vehicles are called the Mobility Vehicle 1, or “MV1,” and are the first and only vehicle designed from the ground up for wheelchair accessibility. Learn more from WMATA.com.

  U.S. Department of Labor Announces App Challenge
  The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) recently announced the launch of its first disability related “app challenge.” The goal of the challenge is to create innovative tools that will improve job opportunities for people with disabilities.
