POSITIONS OPEN
We are growing and have several openings at the Lighthouse of the Big Bend in Tallahassee, FL, listed below. (1) Assistive Technology/ Vocational Specialist for visually impaired/blind Vocational Rehabilitation clients (full time, salary with excellent benefits) 


(2) Three part-time, 20 hr/wk positions OR any two of the below could be combined to be a full-time, salary + benefits position:
* Transition Specialist (teaching visually impaired/blind teens) 

* Early Intervention Specialist (teaching visually impaired/blind babies) 

* Orientation & Mobility Specialist (travel training for visually impaired/blind adults) 


(3) Summer jobs (after school is out approximately June 10 – August 2): 

* FT Transition Specialist to work at our summer camp for teens who are visually impaired/blind 

* 3 PT Drivers to bring Transition students back and forth to camp Monday – Thursday, 6-9am and 3-6pm (no degree needed)


KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  a.. Provides the highest quality instructional services possible to clients who are blind or visually impaired in order to teach the skills they need to become as independent as each individual desires; 
  b.. Travels within the eleven county area served by the Lighthouse to serve clients who are blind or visually impaired in their home, school, workplace, group lesson or at the Lighthouse facility; 
  c.. Initially conducts a Comprehensive Functional Assessment and develops an individualized training plan including immediate and long term goals to provide training and skills for clients who are blind or visually impaired; 
  d.. Prepare and follow curriculum and lesson plans; 
  e.. Provide center-based, outreach and itinerant instructional services appropriate to the assessed needs and goals of the client; 
  f.. Facilitate the client and family’s adjustment to blindness or visual impairment; 
  g.. Coordinates delivery of timely services with the Division of Blind Services (DBS), other collaborating agencies; 
  h.. Facilitates all required paperwork and statistical data related to client files and attendance logs as required by the Lighthouse and DBS; 
  i.. Records client service delivery hours, case notes, reports, and other required case management in the Lighthouse Access database, ensuring that the information is clear, concise, behavioral, objective, measurable, and reflects outcomes related to instructional process; 
  j.. Maintains a positive working relationship with eye care professionals, physicians, employers and other community agencies to develop referral sources and employment resources; 
  k.. Assists with the orientation, training and supervision of new staff, interns, practicum students and/or volunteers; 
  l.. Participates in client staffings with the Lighthouse and/or DBS Staff; 
  m.. Promote community education and awareness through public speaking, community committees, and consultations; 
  n.. Participates in activities and events to perform the organizational mission; 
  o.. Contributes to continuous programmatic quality improvement by innovating and/or seeking opportunities to promote professional growth; 
  p.. Adheres to the “Rehabilitation Teaching Code of Ethics" which is included in the Lighthouse’s Personnel Policy. 
 

REQUIREMENTS:

  a.. Require relevant Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, preferably in Visual Disabilities or related field (i.e. Rehabilitation, Special Education, Education, Occupational Therapy, Social Work, etc); Require excellent verbal and written communication skills; 
  b.. Require good computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e-mail and Internet; 
  c.. Require ability to take initiative and work independently; 
  d.. Prefer ACVREP certification and/or eligible for certification related to position such as certification as a Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist (CVRT), or Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI), or Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) and/or eligible for certification; 
  e.. Prefer experience with assistive technology for the blind such as screen magnifiers, screen readers, note taking devices, Braille translation software, refreshable Braille displays, and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software; 
  f.. Additional experience preferred in vision rehabilitation, non-profit or educational systems, individual assessment and evaluation, functional outcomes

A non-profit agency since 1983, Lighthouse of the Big Bend provides free services for any person who is legally blind in Franklin, Gadsden, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Suwannee, Taylor and Wakulla Counties. The Lighthouse is a United Way agency, fully accredited by the National Accreditation Council, and a member of the Florida Association of Agencies Serving the Blind. The Lighthouse is supported through contracts with the Florida Division of Blind Services, as well as grants through the United Way, Leon County, Capital Medical Society Foundation, and numerous corporate and private donations.
