Bitcoins are a peer-to-peer digital electronic cash system.
The exchange rate is pretty volatile. The bitcoin can be
exchanged, but it's extremely limited. Most of the exchange
happens online. While the dollar exists in paper and coins, the
bitcoin exists in data.
