Marking the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Death of JFK on Mushroom Escape

On Friday November 22, the world will pause to mark the 50th anniversary of
the shocking and tragic assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
On Mushroom Escape, we often bring you radio from the past, exactly as it
aired then, complete with commercials and station identification. There are
literally thousands of documentaries about what happened on that fateful day
in Dallas. But in typical Mushroom Escape fashion, we’ll be marking this
anniversary by bringing you the events as they were broadcast live 50 years
ago. Mushroom Escape will be suspending regular programming at midnight
Eastern on Friday 22 November, for 24 hours of radio coverage of the Kennedy
assassination. We’ll begin with beautifully preserved audio of WBAP in
Dallas. We’ll hear some of their morning drive show, complete with news and
commercials, and coverage of President Kennedy’s arrival in Dallas. You’ll
hear how the story broke, and then we’ll hear network coverage broadcast on
WBAP from NBC. This riveting audio lasts around nine hours. Next, we’ll hear
how the day unfolded on another Dallas radio icon, Big D, KLIF in Dallas.
This upbeat top 40 station, complete with 60’s-style reverb and jingles from
the Dallas-based PAMS, was a huge Dallas phenomenon. They also prided
themselves on their breaking news coverage. The quality of this audio is the
weakest of our three features, but its historical significance makes up for
this, and it is captivating. Finally, we’ll switch to coverage from WCCO in
MINNEAPOLIS. While this may seem like a peculiar choice, we’re running this
audio because for the most part, it contains beautifully preserved audio of
the CBS network coverage. This coverage is both highly professional, and
incredibly moving. The entire compilation of material we’ve selected runs a
little short of 16 hours, at which point we’ll begin a replay until midnight
Eastern time, when normal Mushroom Escape programming will resume. The
Kennedy assassination not only represents one of the most shocking events in
20th century American history, but it also represents a coming of age of
breaking news. After considerable research and careful selection, what we
have for you this Friday is truly special. Join us at midnight Eastern on
the 22nd, 5 AM in the UK, for Kennedy Assassination coverage, as it
happened. Bruce Toews, Operations Manager Mushroom Escape
