Hello all,
I am attaching the press release info for the White Cane Safety Day in St 
Lucie County. Please feel free to join us on Oct 15; please call me if you 
do plan on attending so I can have an idea of how many chairs to set!

We are also contacting the local media and the newspaper should be 
publishing the article prior to the event and may even send a photographer!

The St Lucie Chapter of National Federation of
the Blind (NFB) will be observing White Cane Safety Day on Tuesday, October 
15,
2013 beginning at 11am at WQCS Radio Station, IRSC, 3209 Virginia Avenue, 
Fort
Pierce. The meeting will begin with Fort Pierce Mayor Hudson reading the 
White
Cane Safety Day Proclamation and the White Cane Law. A short orientation &
mobility instruction will be presented by a certified Orientation &
Mobility Instructor from the Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches on
how to use the cane. Participants will then cross 35th Street and return to 
the
WQCS Radio Station and be able to speak with members of the chapter.
On October
6, 1964, HR 753, a joint resolution of the Congress, was signed into law
authorizing the President of the United States to proclaim October 15 of 
each
year as "White Cane Safety Day." President Lyndon Johnson was the
first to make this proclamation. There is a variation of the White Cane Law 
in
every state. The St Lucie Chapter is observing this day to bring awareness 
to residents,
especially drivers, concerning the White Cane Law.
The St Lucie Chapter of NFB meets monthly on the
second Tuesday of the month from 11am -1pm at WQCS Radio Station at Indian
River State College, 3209 Virginia Avenue, Ft Pierce. National Federation of
the Blind is the oldest, largest and most influential membership 
organization
of people who are blind/visually impaired in the United States. Founded in
1940, NFB’s purpose is to help people who are blind/visually impaired 
achieve self-confidence,
self-respect, and self-determination. NFB’s goal is the complete integration 
of
people who are blind/visually impaired into society on the basis of 
equality.
NFB advocates for the civil rights and equality of people who are 
blind/visually
impaired, and develops innovative educational, technological, and training
programs to provide people who are blind and those who are losing their 
vision
with the tools they need to become independent and successful. NFB welcomes
members of all ages, including children and their parents. There is a parent’s
division (FOPBC) for families of children from birth to 18 who are
blind/visually impaired.
