Recently I attended a People Adjusting to Limited Sight (PALS) meeting in
Palatka at the American Legion Hall.  The speaker for the meeting was Bruce
Davis, VIST Coordinator from the VA Medical Center in Gainesville.  
 
He spoke of services and how some guidelines have change in the VA system.
He encouraged all to share with the Veterans the below information.  
 
I asked him specifically about something specially Hearing Aids and
assistive listening devices that some of the new digital aids have
available.  He said that if the Veteran needs it, they will provide.  All to
increase better communication efforts.  
 
He shared with me some documents and below is the information from them:
 
Services available: 
*       Complete eye examination.
*       Physical examination.  Additional evaluation and/or treatment by
specialists as necessary.
*       Hearing examination.
*       Review of veterans benefits.
*       Review of individual's need for adaptive equipment 
*       Review of individuals' rehabilitation and training needs.
 
Eligibility:
*       Discharge from active military services (except for dishonorable
conditions). 
*       Legal Blindness:  legal blindness is defined as best corrected
central visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the better eye with ordinary
corrective lens; OR a visual acuity better than 20/200 with a useful field
of vision reduced to 20 degrees or less in the better eye.
